Today, we join our brothers and sisters across the Commonwealth in mourning a Kentucky law enforcement officer who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving others.

When someone puts on a uniform, they accept a responsibility that most people will never fully understand. They leave their families, answer the call, and put themselves in harm’s way to protect the people and communities they serve. Trooper Phillips made that commitment, and his sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Trooper Phillips’ family, friends, fellow troopers, and the entire Kentucky State Police family. We also stand with all of the men and women in law enforcement who continue to put on the uniform and answer the call, even on the hardest days.

As firefighters and first responders, we understand the bond that exists between those who serve. Different uniforms, different responsibilities, but the same commitment to our communities and to one another. When one of our brothers or sisters falls, we all feel the loss.

Tonight, we lower our heads in remembrance of Trooper Hayden Phillips and keep his loved ones close in our thoughts and prayers.

Rest easy, Trooper Hayden Phillips. Your watch is over. Your service, sacrifice, and memory will live on.

NATIONAL FARM SAFETY & HEALTH WEEK | SEPTEMBER 21–25

As we recognize National Farm Safety & Health Week, West Hardin Fire & Rescue wants to take a moment to recognize the men and women who work every day to keep our communities fed, our farms running, and our agricultural heritage alive.

Here in our community, agriculture is more than an occupation... it’s a way of life. From planting in the spring to long days in the cab during harvest, farming requires hard work, long hours, heavy equipment, and countless hours spent around machinery, livestock, grain, chemicals, and unpredictable conditions.

Unfortunately, those same things can create serious hazards.

As first responders, we know how quickly a normal day on the farm can turn into an emergency. During harvest season especially, we encourage everyone working around farm equipment to slow down, stay alert, and never take a shortcut when it comes to safety.

A few important reminders as harvest season gets underway:

🛑 Watch for farm equipment on the roadway!

Tractors, combines, grain carts, and other equipment may be traveling much slower than normal traffic. Give them plenty of room and be patient when passing.

⚠️ Keep clear of moving machinery.

PTO shafts, augers, belts, chains, and other moving components can cause devastating injuries. Shut equipment down completely before attempting repairs, clearing a jam, or performing maintenance.

🌽 Grain bins and confined spaces can be deadly.

Never enter a grain bin alone. Grain can engulf a person in seconds, and flowing grain can create deadly entrapment hazards.

🔥 Be mindful of fire hazards.

Dry crop residue, overheated bearings, engines, electrical systems, and debris buildup can all contribute to equipment fires. Keep machinery clean and carry appropriate fire extinguishers.

📱 Have a way to call for help.

Keep your phone accessible and make sure someone knows where you're working. In an emergency, call 911 immediately.

🧯 Know where your equipment is and how to shut it down.

If something goes wrong, knowing how to safely stop machinery can make a tremendous difference.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Keep children away from operating equipment.

Farm machinery may look exciting to kids, but blind spots, moving parts, and unexpected movements can make even familiar equipment extremely dangerous.

🚨Most importantly! Don't let the pressure of getting the job done cause you to rush. A field can wait. A load can wait. A repair can wait.

You can't replace a life.

To all of our local farmers, farm families, agricultural workers, and everyone who helps keep our community moving...thank you. We see the long hours, the early mornings, the late nights, and the dedication that goes into putting food on our tables.

This afternoon, West Hardin Fire & Rescue responded with 4 apparatus and 8 personnel to Star Mills Road & Langley Lane in Glendale for a reported field fire with a combine in danger.

Crews arrived and found a New Holland CR8090 combine with fire in the feederhouse area. The fire was believed to have originated from a mechanical issue involving the feederhouse drive system, igniting surrounding crop residue.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire and worked to ensure the fire did not spread into the surrounding field. The combine appeared to have sustained minor fire damage, primarily around the feederhouse area.

As harvest season continues, we encourage everyone operating agricultural equipment to regularly inspect belts, bearings and other moving components, and to keep equipment free of accumulated crop residue.

We also encourage farmers and equipment operators to keep a water-can extinguisher or an appropriate fire extinguisher readily accessible on their equipment. Having an extinguisher available when a fire first starts can help prevent a small equipment fire from becoming a much larger incident.

Today, West Hardin Fire & Rescue honored the life and legacy of Larry Ray, a man who dedicated 33 years of service to the West 84 Fire Department and to the community he proudly served.

Larry was more than a firefighter. He was one of the people who helped lay the foundation of the department. He gave his time, his hard work, and his dedication to helping others, often without seeking recognition or praise.

Over the years, West 84 Fire Department grew and changed. Eventually, West 84 and White Mills Fire Departments came together to form what is now West Hardin Fire & Rescue. While the name and organization may have changed, the history and legacy of the men and women who built those departments remain a part of us.

Larry is a part of that history.

For 33 years, he answered the call when his community needed him. He helped build West 84 Fire Department and left behind a legacy that continues through the department today. Every call we answer, every person we help, and every firefighter who puts on the gear is connected in some way to those who came before us and helped build this department.

Larry also spent 53 years as a truck driver, a testament to the hard-working, dependable man he was throughout his life. His dedication to his work, his family, his community, and his fellow firefighters is something that will not be forgotten.

Today, we remember not only the firefighter Larry was, but the person he was to his family, his friends, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his 75 years.

To Larry’s family, please know that his service and sacrifice mattered. The department he helped build still stands, and his name will forever be a part of its story.

33 years of service.
53 years of hard work.
75 years of a life well lived.
A legacy that will never be forgotten.

We are grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside his family during this difficult time and to pay tribute to one of the men who helped build the foundation of the fire service we proudly continue today.

📢 Auto Extrication Class Postponed

West Hardin Fire and Rescue would like to inform everyone that our Auto Extrication Class, originally scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2026, has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.

We appreciate the tremendous interest and support shown by firefighters, EMS personnel, and departments from across the region. While we regret any inconvenience this may cause, postponing the class will allow us to ensure participants receive the highest quality training experience possible.

A new date is currently being coordinated and will be announced as soon as it is finalized.

Please continue to follow the West Hardin Fire and Rescue page and other social media channels for updates and the announcement of the rescheduled training date.
