1250 Schweitzer Rd, Big Flats, NY
Yesterday, just before 3:00 AM, our pagers went off for a water flow alarm/automatic fire alarm. Upon arrival, Big Flats crews identified smoke and gained access to confirm a working commercial structure fire in our district.
Within minutes of visible fire, engines began rolling in from departments up and down the Southern Tier who dropped everything, left warm beds, and answered the call alongside us.
For the next several hours, crews from three counties stood together on the fireground, at water supply points, and on standby to support other responding agencies. From pulling hose, running water supply, cycling through rehab, and doing whatever it took to get this fire knocked down and keep our community safe.
This is the reality of firefighting in our area.
No single department does this alone, and yesterday was proof of that.
The credit for how smoothly this operation ran belongs to every single agency who showed up:
Elmira Heights • Southport • Horseheads • Tompkins Corners • Town & Country • Golden Glow • Wellsburg • East Hill • Baldwin • Millport • Community Fire & Rescue • Montour Falls • Watkins Glen • Corning Joint Fire District • Painted Post • Gang Mills
Behind the scenes and on scene, our Chemung County Fire Coordinators and Fire Investigators kept resources moving and began the work of figuring out what happened, our 911 Dispatchers juggled a chaotic radio channel without missing a beat, and NYSEG rolled out fast to make the scene safe for everyone working it.
To every single person who left their family, their sleep, and their comfort behind to stand on that fireground yesterday morning, we see you, and we are grateful for you. This is exactly why mutual aid works, and exactly why our community is safer for having neighbors like you.
Thank you for everything you do. 🚒❤️
