Piano makers of the past took great pride in what they were building, always using materials of the highest quality. Their choice of wood and precision craftsmanship is why those pianos are worth restoring back to their original condition. Unfortunately, many pianos today are assembled and restored on a production line where speed is the number one objective. At Select Piano Works, great pride is

taken in each restoration. All work is completed by hand—from fitting the pinblock to hanging the hammers, and finally, hand rubbing the new lacquer finish. I pledge to use only the highest quality materials and parts. Each step in my rebuilding process has the goal of insuring the optimum touch, tone and appearance.

🎹 Meet Terry! 🎹

Terry’s journey in the piano world started at 19, learning the craft from his great uncle Glen. He later worked for Schmitt Music before launching his own business in 1996, originally known as Terry Sipe Piano Service and now proudly operating as Select Piano Works.

Over the years, Terry has had the privilege of tuning and rebuilding pianos for homes, churches, schools, and universities. He’s even worked on some truly high-profile projects! 🎶

One of his most memorable moments was tuning a piano for the legendary Aretha Franklin. He also had the honor of tuning for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for many years at their Flyte Tyme Studios . Terry was even trusted with tuning a piano reserved for Janet Jackson at Flyte Tyme! 🙌

When he’s not immersed in the world of pianos, Terry enjoys quality time with his family, fishing, golfing, and exploring the beauty of Minnesota. 🌟

We’re a family-owned piano shop located in beautiful Minnesota, and we’re excited to introduce ourselves!

🧔🏻‍♂️Terry (Dad & Husband) - With 40 years of experience, Terry is a skilled piano technician who learned the trade from his uncle, Glen, and has been perfecting his craft ever since.
👱‍♀️ Susan (Mom & Wife) - Susan has been the heart of Select Piano Works since 1996. She’s the friendly voice answering calls, scheduling tunings, and keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
👩 Hannah (Daughter) - Growing up surrounded by pianos, Hannah has always been involved in the family business, from taking lessons to "helping" her dad in the shop (though Terry might say she made things a little more interesting!).
🧔‍♂️Paul (Son-in-Law) - Paul is the newest member of the team, apprenticing with Terry. With years of experience working with metal, he’s excited to learn the art of piano restoration and tuning.

As I walked out to open the shop as this one is ready for delivery, I couldn’t help but notice the crispness of the air. It is hard to believe summer has come and gone. Like countless others, 2020 has proven challenging as a small business. We are grateful for the referrals and tuning calls. Wishing you all well.

Where has time gone?? Gratefully, the shop has been very busy but our posts have suffered. With this uplifting note we received in the mail yesterday, we decided it was time to start up again. Wishing you all joy in your jobs!

We are once again grateful for starting the week out with positive feedback on a Steinway Model O that went out recently. Terry had performed a complete restoration and refinish on it.

Earlier this summer, Terry had the opportunity to spend a week assisting a colleague in Canon City, Colorado with rebuilding work. Terry was a bit envious of the view from his shop!

Gratefully, the shop has been busy all summer with a number of rebuilding projects. Last month, found Terry working on the major job of installing a new soundboard for a Steinway O.

Below is a photo of the soundboard press in action. It is used for gluing ribs to the underside of the piano. The Oak "go bars" are used to press ribs firmly to the soundboard after glue has been applied. Each bar has 200 lbs of pressure and there are approximately 100 bars.
