Last night we wrapped up the final session of our Marketing Cohort, focusing on one of the most overlooked business tools: data analytics. Kim Smith facilitated an excellent session explaining how analytics can help you improve your marketing.

How deep are you diving into your numbers?

Analytics can tell you who your customers are, where they're coming from, what's working, what's not, and where your marketing dollars should go. It can help guide decisions on targeting, pricing, products, and growth opportunities.

Too many businesses are standing on the edge of the pool guessing—or worse, hitting their head on the shallow end by making decisions without the data to back them up.

The businesses that grow are the ones willing to take the dive.

So, are you guessing... or are you swimming in the data?

Congratulations to Gap Antique Parlor on receiving a VCEDA Seed Capital Fund award! It has been a pleasure working alongside them as they continue building and growing their business here in Southwest Virginia.

Small businesses like this are helping shape the future of our region — creating opportunity, serving their communities, and proving that creativity and determination are alive and well in Southwest Virginia.

Congratulations again, and thank you to Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority for continuing to invest in entrepreneurs and small business growth across the region.

When Patrick Ryan set out to open Gap Antique Parlor in Big Stone Gap, VA, he had in mind opening an antique vendor mall with true antiques, vintage goods, cultural workshops and a vinyl record store and listening room. The new business is located in the historic three-story Minor building at 301 Wood Ave., East, which Ryan has been renovating to accommodate up to 125 antique/vintage vendor booths. Plans are to open during the month of July.

Gap Antique Parlor LLC is a recent recipient of a $10,000 Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority (VCEDA) Seed Capital Matching Grant. Seed capital grants are funded from regional funds received by VCEDA which are paid by the natural gas industry.

Let’s Talk About SBA Funding (and Those Ads You’re Seeing)

You’ve probably seen the ads:
👉 “SBA Microloans!”
👉 “Fast SBA Funding!”
👉 “Apply Now!”

Here’s what you need to know:

Most of these are not direct SBA loans.

They are typically third-party lenders or platforms using SBA-related programs—or simply marketing alongside them.
And in many cases, they may: Charge fees | Offer higher-cost financing | or not clearly explain how the funding is structured

Now here’s the truth:

👉 You cannot apply directly to the SBA for most loan programs
👉 SBA loans are made through approved lenders (like banks or nonprofit microlenders)
👉 And the process involves real underwriting—not just a quick online application

That doesn’t mean these programs are bad—
but it does mean you need to understand what you’re signing up for. Before you apply anywhere, take a step back.

At the SBDC, we:
✔️ Help you understand your funding options
✔️ Walk through what lenders are actually looking for
✔️ Prepare you for the application process
✔️ Connect you with trusted funding partners

And here’s the important part:

👉 Our services are completely free. We do not charge fees.

So before you click “Apply Now”…
make sure you have a clear strategy—not just a quick solution. The right funding decision can move your business forward. The wrong one can set you back.

Not all ‘SBA funding’ is created equal—make sure you know the difference.

The Truth About Small Business Grants

Let’s talk about GRANTS for small businesses…

There’s a lot of buzz out there about “free money” to start or grow a business. And yes—grants do exist.

But here’s the reality:

Most grants are highly specific in who they fund.
Some require a local government or nonprofit to apply on your behalf.
Others are statewide or national programs, which means you’re competing with hundreds—sometimes thousands—of applicants.

And many are tied to:

Certain industries (like manufacturing, energy, tourism)
Specific populations or communities
Measurable job creation or economic impact

👉 So yes, grants are out there…
👉 But they are not a primary or guaranteed funding source for most small businesses.

The strongest businesses we work with focus on:
✔️ Solid business planning
✔️ Smart use of loans or owner investment
✔️ Building revenue early

If a grant fits, we’ll absolutely help you go after it.
But the strategy is always bigger than waiting on one.
