Over the past month, America's pastime has been on the global stage with the World Baseball Classic. 20 countries are competing to be named the best in baseball.
While the teams have shown some differences in style on the field, there have been plenty of Cultural differences in how they celebrate big moments.
🇺🇸 The USA team has a very neutral reaction to big plays. Baseball in the USA has many unwritten cultural rules that players are expected to follow. It's seen as disrespectful to flip your bat after a home run. It's also a very collectivist team, and bat flipping is seen as putting the attention on yourself.
🇰🇷 On the other hand, the South Korea team takes their bat flip celebration seriously and treats them as its own art form.
🇨🇺🇩🇴🇨🇺 The teams from the Caribbean are the most expressive in the tournament. A bench-clearing celebration with rehearsed acts and poses follows each home run.
🇯🇵 Team Japan is unique in that their pitchers tip their caps to the hitter after a home run as a sign of respect, not something that any other country's pitching staff does regularly.
This highlights strong cultural intelligence and adaptability to behavioral preferences. Many players represent their heritage rather than their birthplaces, which has led many American players to adopt more expressive celebrations. Conversely, those who adapted to Major League Baseball’s reserved style in the USA show that this adaptation hasn’t diminished their authenticity when they return to their national teams.
