🥶 Wind chills between -20 and -50°F are expected statewide Friday morning and midday, January 23rd, 2026.

Since everyone has been aware all week, it goes without saying that you should be prepared for the cold as we sit here at 11 am EST on Thursday morning. Wind chills below -20°F will allow for frostbite in a matter of 30 minutes or less, with frostbite occurring in 15 minutes or less for the UP. We don't have an in with the school districts, however with the cutoff typically being wind chills of -20°F, we would presume widespread wind chill (cold) days are on the table. Cold weather advisories and extreme cold warnings are now in effect statewide. The warm spots on this map are due to microclimate influence from lake effect snow/warm lake waters. This does mean a few locations will only bottom out between -15 and -20°F. For those who are curious about overnight low temperatures, they will dip between -5 and -25°F, with lake effect zones dropping down to just above 0°F. Be safe out there, and make sure to pack your winter survival kit today if you haven't done so for your vehicle if you plan on traveling this weekend.

Additional snowfall is ongoing, and expected over the next 36 hours in the form of lake effect, January 19th into 20th, 2026. Once again, this is not what has fallen, this is still what may fall for your area by Tuesday night as lake effect snow will continue.

Our dark blue and pink zones have been getting buried in lake effect snow both Saturday and especially Sunday, and today we continue to see more of the same. Additional totals of 4"+ are likely in these areas. Away from the lakeshore, we are still looking at those 1-3"/2-4" snowfall measurements to show up, but for many, it'll be a waiting game. Lake effect snow will be crossing the entire state at times as those gusty winds carry the precipitation far away from the lakeshore. With these winds up near 40 mph at times, it'll also be hard to accurately measure. Blizzard-like conditions will continue across the northern UP and western LP, meaning reduced visibility is in store for many motorists today traveling in these areas. Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories continue between now, and early Tuesday morning.

We are also expecting another small clipper on Wednesday, but we won't have details on that until tomorrow as we wait for this period of lake effect snow to finish up its feast.
