You've probably heard this one before: dump a bag of ice into your RV's black tank, add some water, and go for a drive.

The idea is that the ice will slide around inside the tank, scrub the walls, and knock loose stubborn buildup.

RVers have recommended it for decades. In fact, I STILL see it regularly suggested in comments.

But a few people have actually tested the method using clear tanks and cameras so they could see exactly what was happening while the vehicle was moving.

How much does the ice actually move? Does adding more ice help? And how much of the cleaning comes from the ice versus something much simpler?

We looked at the tests and what they found.

Cold weather can do some expensive things to an RV if you put it into storage without properly preparing it. 🥶

Winterizing isn't just about adding RV antifreeze. It's really a full storage checklist designed to protect the plumbing, battery, exterior and interior while the camper sits unused.

Before storage, turn off the propane, fully charge and disconnect the house battery and inspect exterior seals for cracks or damage.

It's also important to look carefully for tiny rodent entry points. Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small openings, so clean the RV thoroughly and remove anything that might attract them.

The refrigerator should be defrosted, dried and left open during storage. Water tanks and plumbing also need to be completely drained, especially if the RV could experience freezing temperatures.

For cold-weather storage, the process includes draining the holding tanks, removing water filters, emptying water lines and properly preparing the water heater and other water-connected appliances.

It takes some time in the fall, but it's much better than discovering frozen plumbing or water damage in spring.

Take the photo BEFORE backing into the campsite. 😂

That is when everyone is still smiling.

Nobody has yelled “OTHER WAY!”

Nobody has jumped out of the truck to inspect a tree.

Nobody has asked why the hand signals suddenly changed halfway through.

You are still a happy couple arriving at a beautiful campground.

Then the backing begins.

Of course, ten minutes later the RV is parked, everyone is speaking again and the whole thing becomes funny.

Usually.

Every camping couple needs a good before photo.

Free overnight RV parking at a casino isn't hard to find. Free parking with actual hookups is a different story entirely.

Most casinos that let RVers stay just give you a spot to dry camp for the night. A handful go much further.
