New sod goes through a real transition after installation, and it can look a little rough before it looks right. That first week is mostly about watering and patience, not mowing or worrying over minor color changes. By the one-month mark, roots are reaching into your native soil, and the color starts to even out, and by the one-year mark, you have a lawn that behaves the way you expected all along.

We wrote up a full week-by-week breakdown of what to expect at each stage, from the first tug test to when it is safe to fertilize. Worth a read if you installed sod this year or are thinking about it πŸ‘‰ https://www.southdallasturfandsupply.com/blog/your-lawns-first-year-a-realistic-timeline-for-birmingham-homeowners/

Mulch breaks down and settles over the course of a season, especially with the rain Birmingham gets in summer. By August, a lot of beds are down to a thin layer that does little anymore. Topping it back up to a full three inches restores the moisture retention and w**d control you had back in the spring.

We carry bulk mulch in multiple varieties, ready for pickup or delivery. Call us at πŸ“² 205-775-8746 or browse online: southdallasturfandsupply.com/products/mulch/

A raised garden bed, a small retaining wall on a sloped yard, a defined border along a walkway: cross ties handle all of it well. They hold soil in place, give a clean edge to work with, and hold up outside for years without much upkeep.

They are one of those materials that do not get talked about much, but once you start a project with them, you see how many ways they come in handy. We keep them in stock and ready to go. Stop by or call πŸ“² 205-775-8746 to talk through your project.

Alabama clay holds water longer than sandy soil, which sounds like a good thing until you realize it also drains slower and compacts more easily. Skipping proper grading before a sod install often shows up months later as soggy low spots or thin patches where roots could not get enough air.

A good prep job usually means breaking up the top few inches, grading for drainage, and working in some topsoil or organic matter before the sod ever gets laid down. It takes a little more time upfront, but it makes a real difference in how the lawn performs once it is established.

At this time of the year, the answer is not always about moisture.

If a section of lawn stays brown no matter how much you water it, and the turf lifts up easily like a loose carpet when you tug on it, grubs are a likely culprit. They feed on grass roots just below the surface.

A simple way to check is to cut a small square of turf about an inch deep and fold it back. Several grubs in that section is usually enough to explain the damage.

A small garden bed is an easy way to fill the after-school hours.

Once the school routine kicks back in, that stretch between the bus dropping off and dinner can feel like it needs something to fill it. A raised bed or a corner of the yard set aside for a few easy plants gives kids something hands-on to check on every afternoon, and it does not take much space or time to get going.

Fall vegetables and quick-growing flowers both work well for this. Bring the kids by and we can help you pick out something that will actually hold their interest through the season. Stop by at πŸ“4762 Overton Rd., Irondale, AL 35210 or call πŸ“² 205-775-8746.

You do not need poured concrete or pavers to create a solid outdoor gathering spot. A layer of gravel over a properly prepped base gives you a stable, attractive surface for a fire pit, seating area, or small patio at a fraction of the cost.

It drains well, does not crack in the winter, and holds up to Birmingham weather without much maintenance. Give us a call at πŸ“² 205-775-8746 to talk through your project or browse online: southdallasturfandsupply.com/products/gravel/

Some suppliers save their best service for repeat commercial accounts and put everyone else at the back of the line. That is not how we run things. A homeowner picking up five bags of mulch gets the same straight answers and the same care as a contractor ordering a full pallet of sod.

We think that is just what it means to run a shop people can count on, whether you are here once a year or every week. πŸ’š

A lawn that is already drought-stressed, thin, blue-gray, slow to bounce back after foot traffic, is not the right time to fertilize. Get the watering right first and let the grass stabilize. Adding nitrogen to a lawn that is already struggling can push it past a point it has a hard time recovering from.

On the other hand, turf that is green, actively growing, and getting consistent water during a moderate stretch is exactly when fertilizer pays off. Good timing matters more than the product.

Sod that has been sitting on pallets in the July heat arrives stressed before it ever touches the ground. Fresh-cut sod roots faster, handles the installation process better, and gives your lawn the kind of start that holds up through the rest of the season. We keep our inventory moving so you are not getting something that has been sitting around.

We carry Bermuda, Zoysia, and Centipede, all available for pickup or delivery. Give us a call at πŸ“² 205-775-8746, and we will help you figure out how much you need and which variety fits your yard: southdallasturfandsupply.com/sod/
