Here is a very glamorous piece of advice:

Know where your parents keep their paperwork.
Seriously.

You may know your mama’s coffee order, exactly what your dad is going to say when Alabama misses a field goal, and which sibling absolutely cannot be trusted to bring the macaroni and cheese.

But do you know where the deed is?
Do you know whether there’s a Power of Attorney?
Do you know where the insurance policies are?
Do you know what bank they use?
Do you know who their doctors are?
Does somebody know the passwords?

Nobody wants to think about needing any of that information.
And then one day somebody needs it.

Ask now.
You can thank us later.

One thing we’ve noticed after years of doing this work is how uncomfortable some of the places surrounding aging can feel.

Law offices can feel stuffy. Nursing home admissions offices can feel clinical. And when you’re already overwhelmed, sometimes sitting across a desk answering questions about money, paperwork, property, and decisions your family made years ago can feel a little intimidating.

Especially when the reason you’re there is already hard.

Your parents have spent your entire life being the people you call. The people who know what to do. The people who take care of things.

And then sometimes, almost overnight, you’re the one being asked to make the decisions for them.

That’s really what this work has become to us.

It’s sitting across the table from a daughter trying to honor what her mom wanted.

It’s helping a husband figure out how to take care of his wife.

It’s telling a family, “Okay, tell us what happened,” and making sure they know they can tell us everything.

And the more we’ve thought about the future of Coleman Consulting, the more we’ve realized we want everything about us to feel like that.

Less corporate. Less intimidating. Less feeling like you need to have the right answers before you walk through the door.

More of a place where you can pull up a chair, put everything on the table and know, okay… these people are going to help us figure this out.

We’ve been thinking a lot about what that should look like.

Consider this another hint about what’s happening in October. 👀

We have conducted some very official research and determined that approximately 87% of important family decisions happen in one of four places:

The kitchen table.
The car.
A family group chat.
The kitchen again, except this time everyone is standing for some reason.

Our source is several years of sitting with families, so we feel fairly confident about the numbers.

There’s just something about a kitchen table. It’s where you talk about money and what Mom wants and who has the paperwork. It’s where somebody tells a story that has nothing to do with why everyone gathered in the first place, somebody else gets hungry, and eventually someone says, “Okay, but what are we actually going to do?”

Some very important things get figured out around kitchen tables.

We happen to like that.

Actually, we like it quite a bit more than you probably realize right now.

Aging has a reputation problem. We have plans to fix that.

This October, something new is coming to Alabama.

We’re talking about aging differently. Planning before the panic. Having the conversations we tend to put off. Making getting older feel less like something to dread and more like something worth planning for.

Because aging is personal.

It’s our parents. Our grandparents. The people we love. Eventually, it’s us.

If you’re planning for yourself, helping a parent navigate what comes next, caring for someone you love, or simply want to know your options before you need them, follow along.

And if aging is your work, social workers, nurses, attorneys, case managers, senior living and nursing home professionals, healthcare providers, caregivers, and community partners, stay close.

We’ll be dropping hints between now and October about what’s coming, what’s changing, and how you can be part of it.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is the way families sell a loved one’s home.

If your loved one is in a nursing home or may need long term care soon, please call our office before you ever list the home.

How and when you sell the home matters.

Selling a home for less than the county tax assessed value could result in a Medicaid transfer penalty. Waiting until your loved one is already on Medicaid can also limit your planning options.

The earlier we can help, the better.

In many situations, if we plan before your loved one has spent down their funds, we may be able to sell the home first and reserve those proceeds in a trust to be used later.

The longer you wait, the fewer options you may have.

If you’re thinking about selling a loved one’s home, don’t guess. Sit down with a long term care planner first. We’d much rather help you create a plan before the house is listed than try to fix a problem after it’s sold.
