We’re excited to welcome Tony Aukland and Dr. Rod Jonas to the Bismarck Public Schools Board, and congratulate Amanda Peterson on her re-election to continue serving!

These leaders will help guide district policy and support the mission of BPS with a continued focus on student success.

The newly elected and returning members will begin their terms on July 1, 2026, and will attend their first board meeting on July 13, 2026, when board leadership positions will be selected.

Thank you to all candidates who participated and to our community members who voted — your engagement helps strengthen our schools.

Congrats to Amanda Peterson & Tony Aukland. I look forward to working alongside you, Dan, Donnell, & Dr. Jeff Fastnacht, BPS Superintendent in the years to come.

This campaign was built on a simple belief: invest in people, not programs. I will stand by that promise.

"On June 9th, 2026, the citizens of Bismarck have the opportunity to put a man of character and with a wealth of experience in the field of education, on the Bismarck Public School Board, this person is Dr. Rod Jonas. Dr. Jonas has been a friend for over thirty years and is a man of strong faith, loves his family and has a strong passion for the field of education and educators.

Dr. Rod Jonas is a leader of people. This started at a young age as an athlete then leading into the classrooms and to the Dean of Education at the University of Mary. His career in education began in Seoul South Korea as a teacher and coach. Dr. Jonas's career has spanned nearly 50 years with the last 37 at the University of Mary here in Bismarck. A major part of the successful career of Dr. Jonas, was developing relationships with all concerned for positive outcomes and teaching those around him how to do the same. This is why we believe Bismarck needs him on the school board to help improve issues where needed. Many good things are happening within our schools, yet there are issues. One issue at the top of the list is that a teacher shortage is upon us and Dr. Jonas has a strong desire to correct the shortage issue. We have an opportunity to take him up on his deep enthusiasm to help our schools improve.

We would personally like to thank Dr. Rod Jonas for stepping up to run for the Bismarck School Board and we are asking that you vote for him on June 9th."

"Your vote matters! I can think of no one more qualified than Dr. Rod Jonas to serve on the Bismarck School Board. I encourage voters to consider his record, credentials, and experience in education when they head to the polls on June 9.

I have known him for over 30 years and watched him dedicate his life to education. First as a coach, then a professor and finally the Dean of the Liffrig School of Education and Behavioral Science at the University of Mary. Having raised his own children in the Bismarck Public School system, he not only understands the teacher’s role in the local classroom but also how to develop highly effective professional educators in our community.

Dr. Jonas is an exceptional leader, manager, and administrator. He communicates clearly and effectively and excels at solving complex problems by engaging others to help develop practical solutions. While dean, he viewed his role as supporting faculty by helping them succeed, and removing obstacles which stood in their way. Recognizing the high cost of turnover, retaining key staff and faculty was a priority he fought for. Not afraid to challenge the status quo, he worked with faculty to enhance student life on campus and continued to update university curriculum to keep it current and relevant to today’s students.
