🍂 The “BER” months are here! 🍁❄️
As we head into September, October, November, and December, it’s a good time to give your septic system a little extra attention. Cooler temperatures, freezing weather, and wet conditions can all create problems if your system isn’t prepared.
Here are a few things to watch for this fall and winter:
🚽 **Slow drains or toilets** — These can be an early warning sign that something isn’t quite right.
👃 **Unusual septic odors** — Notice a sewage smell around your tank, cleanouts, or drain field? Don’t ignore it.
💧 **Wet or mushy areas** — Keep an eye out for unusually wet or green areas over your drain field, especially after heavy rain or snow.
🥶 **Freezing temperatures** — Shallow septic lines and exposed areas can be more susceptible to freezing during extended cold spells.
⚠️ **Backups** — If your drains suddenly slow down or back up when temperatures drop, it could be a sign of a frozen line or another septic issue.
🚗 **Watch where you drive** — Avoid parking or driving heavy equipment over your septic tank or drain field, especially when the ground is saturated or frozen.
🧺 **Spread out heavy water use** — Try not to run multiple loads of laundry while also taking long showers or doing other high-water-use activities.
📍 **Know where your tank and cleanouts are** — Before the ground freezes or snow covers the area, make sure you know where everything is located.
🛠️ A little prevention can go a long way!
Don’t wait until you have a backup in the middle of winter to find out there’s a problem with your septic system. If you notice changes in how your drains are working, unusual odors, or wet spots around your drain field, it’s worth having it checked out.
Take care of your septic system now, and it’ll take better care of you all winter long!❄️
