These Air Jordan 9 “Johnny Kilroy” were originally a men’s 8.5 and required a complete sole swap and midsole repaint. One of the biggest challenges with restoring older Jordans is that midsoles and tooling can change from one production year to another. The newer Air Jordan 9 midsoles are not necessarily identical in shape, dimensions, materials, or construction to the midsoles used 13+ years ago when these were originally made. Because of those changes, I had to use a men’s size 8 midsole because it came closest to matching the existing 8.5 uppers and gave the best overall fit.
This restoration also shows why restoring older sneakers to exact factory specifications can be difficult. The original upper was designed around the specific sole tooling used during its original production, and once that original midsole is replaced with a different-generation component, some of the differences in the factory construction become exposed. The goal was to get these as close as possible !
