Last night, with my head resting softly on my pillow, I lay awake worrying.
Worrying about what, I've no idea. Nothing important. But worrying. That's what my dumb brain decided to do.
Earlier that evening, Alison and I had hired a babysitter and gone to Chinatown for dumplings and foot massages.
The only night that week I had trouble sleeping. Also the only night I hadn't done anything physically demanding.
Not a coincidence.
NOTHING resets my brain like exhausting my body.
When I've exhausted my body, my brain focuses. My anxiety quiets. My sleep deepens. My mood lifts.
Your body is hardware. Your mind is software.
Stop trying to fix the software when the hardware hasn't been touched.
Exercise is the best medicine.

Your children are watching you make time for your fitness.

They're watching when you get after it, even though you're tired. They're watching when you come home sweaty and happy instead of stressed and depleted. They're watching when you put your health first, not last.

They're learning that taking care of yourself is not selfish. Itโ€™s selfless.
You are not just exercising.

You are showing them what a person who respects their body looks like.

I want to be very clear: the research on strength training and health is not ambiguous.

3 hours a week. That's all it takes to measurably reduce your risk of depression, anxiety, heart disease, diabetes, and premature death.

But here's what the research can't fully capture.

There's something that happens when you lift weights that no study has ever been able to put into words.

No matter what's going on outside the gym (the stress, the uncertainty, the pressure, the noise) when I pick up something heavy and put it back down, everything gets quieter.

The business problem that felt unsurmountable an hour ago suddenly has a solution.

The anxiety that was sitting on my chest when I walked in is gone by the time I walk out.
Like it's all going to be okay.

Because it is.

Modern life will try to break you. Your body is the best defense you have against it.
