Protecting Your Business (And Your Customers) from a POS Security Breach
Day after day, POS software companies are developing an increasing number of options to better protect and serve customers.
Though hackers are always innovating, there are steps you can take to protect your data and your customers.

By utilizing the tips mentioned in this article, you can work against these hackers and better serve your clientele.
1. Utilize End-to-End Encryption
Encryption is one of the most powerful security tools you can have at your disposal. Recently, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Security teamed up with Ingenico to create a product that will protect customer data from the most prevalent cyber attacks.
So how does end-to-end encryption help keep your customers’ data safe?
Most malware is designed to steal information the moment a customer swipes their card. By retrieving credit card numbers from a POS machine’s RAM memory, the hacker can gain access to that unencrypted information.
If a company chooses to use end-to-end encryption, however, the credit card information will be protected from malware the moment it is swiped.
In other words, this process “locks” the customer’s financial information from the first swipe until it reaches its destination.
Since hackers are continuously working to better their own techniques, end-to-end encryption is a method of protection that prevents attacks and eliminates the vast majority of system vulnerabilities.
2. Increase Monitoring
All too often, the only security put into place within a business’ system is an easily guessable password. Hackers have developed an array of tools to crack passwords, which can then be used to gain access to financial information.
By employing additional security precautions you can help prevent a data breach. Some of the most common methods are the following:
• Anti-Virus Software
• Firewalls
• Two-Way Authentication
While utilizing these suggestions is a start, the most beneficial way of protecting your system is by monitoring all payment activity. As a business owner, it is essential to track suspicious activity or vulnerabilities at every computer and POS machine in your establishment.
Companies like Netsurion have begun offering security solutions such as these to small- and medium-sized businesses.
3. Test Your Procedures
Once you’ve decided to employ end-to-end encryption - or put into place security measures and monitoring techniques to work against cyber attacks - you need to make sure that they’re working efficiently.
POS products are often installed by third-party providers who may not specialize in security.

Testing will help you find inconsistencies or missteps that could lead to a data breach.
The best way to test is by hiring a security specialist. They will pit your POS system’s security measures against the most common forms of cyber attacks.

Implications if you do not have an EMV terminal - NetcomMerchantService / Merchant Service Consultants

Well October 1st deadline has already passed but you still don't have a EMV terminal, don't worry you are not alone. In fact, according to survey results released by The Strawhecker Group, it illustrates only 27% of US merchants were EMV-ready by the October 1st liability shift. This represents a sizable decline from earlier estimation of 34%.

If the merchant has not upgraded their POS to EMV terminal, liability for fraudulent transactions will shift from the credit card provider to the merchant.

We have provided a list below of EMV compliant terminals that we currently offer.

Verifone VX520
Ingenico ICT220
Ingenico ICT250
Pax S80

MYTH #1: Implementing EMV in your business is mandatory and will be enforced by a government regulation.

Answer: False

Last year it was announced that all credit card providers must issue secure chip-and-pin cards to their customers by October, 2015. If the merchant has not upgraded their POS to EMV terminal, liability for fraudulent transactions will shift from the credit card provider to the merchant.

MYTH #2: EMV is Old Technology

Answer: True

EMV was actually developed in 1993 which makes it more than 20 years old.

MYTH #3: Once a business upgrades to EMV, you can no longer accept regular mag stripe cards.

Answer: False

You will be able to use your new EMV terminal to accept both types of cards, mag stripe card and EMV-ready cards.

MYTH #4: EMV is a requirement for complying with PCI Data Security Standards.

Answer: False

You do not need to implement EMV in order to be PCI compliant.

MYTH #5: EMV is very expensive

FBI Warning Over EMV

FBI has now posted a revised version of the warning about vulnerabilities with new chip-embedded credit cards. Full details are available here.

Many merchants as well as banks, have already adapted the new EMV terminals as well as replaced hundreds of millions of traditional cards. While the EMV cards are meant to offer higher security, the FBI warns that no technology is safe or eliminates fraud completely. As technology advances, so does the the criminal mind who will continue to look for ways to exploit vulnerabilities with new technology and steal payment information.

As stated on their website:

"Although EMV cards provide greater security than traditional magnetic strip cards, an EMV chip does not stop lost and stolen cards from being used in stores, or for online or telephone purchases when the chip is not physically provided to the merchant, referred to as a card-not-present transaction. Additionally, the data on the magnetic strip of an EMV card can still be stolen if the merchant has not upgraded to an EMV terminal and it becomes infected with data-capturing malware. Consumers are urged to use the EMV feature of their new card wherever merchants accept it to limit the exposure of their sensitive payment data.

Consumers should closely safeguard the security of their EMV cards and PINs. This includes being vigilant in handling, signing, and activating a card as soon as it arrives in the mail, reviewing statements for irregularities, and promptly reporting lost or stolen credit cards to the issuing bank. Consumers should also shield the keypad from bystanders when entering a PIN, as PINs are vulnerable to cybercriminals who work to steal these numbers to commit ATM and cash-back crimes."

In conclusion, FBI asks for all merchants who currently offer ability to accept EMV cards, to use same precautions as they use with Mag Stripe Cards. If you are a merchant who accepts sales over the phone or online, you are encouraged to use additional security measures. For online payments, the information should be encrypted, and always make sure your server is as secured as possible of any potential security risks. One of the most common ways hackers have been utilizing lately to gain access to your server is from Brute Force Attack. The best way to prevent Brute Force Attack, is to make sure you always use a long string of random letters and numbers for your password and not use something easy that a computer system can guess. Also make sure to update all your passwords every 30-60 days.
