🍼Save this post to refer back to when storing your breastmilk.

❄️If you have a deep freezer (at -4° or colder) you can actually freeze your breastmilk for up to 12 months!

🌡️When you’re ready to thaw your breastmilk, put the bottle or bag in the refrigerator overnight, hold it under warm running water, or set in a container of warm water. And remember that heating breastmilk in microwaves is not safe.

📆Once breastmilk is thawed it can be stored in the refrigerator, but it must be used within 24 hours.

Sleep (+ Store) Well 🤍

P.S. It should say “refrigerator” not “refrigeratore” in the second slide 😑

Here in Michigan, the temps are finally starting to rise and there’s no longer a risk for snow showers 😳

☁️So as we move from Spring to Summer lets talk about how we can create an optimal sleep environment for our little ones.

❄️Keep It Cool. Did you know the optimal temperature for baby’s room is between 68-82? Most of our A/C units are working overtime over the summer months but even that doesn’t quite cut it. Try using a fan in your child’s room if the temperate is still not ideal.

🩲Less is Best. Forget the footie pajamas. Pack away the fleece. Leave the long sleeves in the closet. Dressing baby in a short sleeved shirt or onesie with a super light sleep sack (think thin cotton or muslin) should be your go to this summer.

🌞Avoid Sunlight. Not all day, but consider coming inside an hour prior to bedtime. Sunlight actually prohibits your body’s production of melatonin (our sleepy hormone). So going directly from sunlight to baby’s room, may hinder her chances of falling asleep at a decent hour. She needs time to build optimal levels of melatonin required to sleep.

💦Chug, chug, chug. Dehydration also hinders melatonin production. So make sure your child is very well hydrated. Avoid sugary drinks and caffeine, stick to water as much as you can.

🌳Get outside. Fresh air can help baby sleep. So spending time outside, running, jumping, playing or even a simple walk should be on the schedule each day. Exposure to sunlight also helps set baby’s circadian rhythm.

✈️Stressed about sleep and traveling over spring break? Luckily there’s plenty of options and solutions to help baby sleep while away!

🌑 If staying at a house or airbnb and room sharing - invest in a to give babe his own space. Another solution is black garbage bags and painters tape - hear me out. Taping garbage bags over the windows to block out the light ensures a dark room for midday naps and early sunrises.

🛁If staying in a hotel, utilize the bathroom or walk in closet to give baby his own space. A bathroom or closet ensures a dark space for naps as well as a separate area so you’re not waking to every noise babe makes through out the night (and vice versa!).

☀️Take advantage of those movement naps. Don’t feel like you need to be chained to your accommodations the entire time. Utilize a stroller or carrier for a movement nap so no one has to miss out on the fun.

⌚️If you’ll be out past bedtime and you have a babe under 1 with you, offer the last feed while you’re out, put him in the stroller and start his night sleep while you’re finishing up your night. Just transfer him to his pack and play once your back to your place.

😓If sleep doesn’t go as planned while traveling, don’t fret! It’s all temporary and babe will be back on track when you’re home and on his regular schedule.

💕Your baby’s attachment to you doesn’t rely on being next to them at all times, or rushing to their side every time they feel frustrated or challenged. It is a product of consistent, reliable parenting, loving reassurance, and confidence that you will keep them safe, secure, and protected.

💕Opportunities to assure, comfort, and encourage your baby will present themselves several times every day, I guarantee you, and when everyone in the family is well-rested, we’re more patient, more engaged, and better able to provide the love and support that are the true foundation of a secure attachment with our children.

💕As Mary Ainsworth herself said in her 2004 study, “It is acceptable, from an attachment perspective, to sleep train.”

💕The only change you’ll see is how well your baby sleeps.

🤍We’ve been working with a lot of families whose babies are in daycare either full time or part time so we wanted to revisit our daycare + sleep post for anyone who may have missed these helpful tips!

😅One of the biggest hesitations parents have when sleep training is if baby goes to daycare.

✔️Whether they’ve already gotten their baby on a carefully planned nap schedule or they’re planning on starting one, a problem obviously arises if their daycare provider doesn’t follow that same schedule. Here are a few tips to make sleep training happen seamlessly between home & daycare.

🗣️Communicate with your daycare provider what the new schedule is. Set strict guidelines and offer reasons why you’ve chosen your schedule and what the benefits are!

👀Make it clear that you prefer baby isn’t assisted in falling asleep. Encourage them to place baby in her crib awake for her nap.

💕Let them know that you are okay with a little crying while baby self soothes as long as her belly is full and she’s not hurt.

💤Insist that baby only sleeps in a crib or pack n play to keep the sleeping environment consistent.

🏠If possible, try to start sleep training at home for as many days in a row as possible. That way baby will have a strong foundation before transitioning to naps at her daycare.

👩‍🍼Let the daycare know what you would prefer as far as “sleep props.” If you’ve just broken a pacifier habit, tell them and ask they don’t use a pacifier at nap time. Suggest a lovey instead!

😱If your daycare provider’s policies don’t align with your sleep training guidelines, don’t panic!

🔄The good news is that babies are quite often able to distinguish, somewhat, between what happens at daycare and what happens at home, as far as sleep routines are concerned. They have an easier time realizing that, even though they might have gotten rocked to sleep in one environment, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be getting the same treatment at home.

❓What questions do you have about daycare and sleep? Leave them in the comments section and we’re happy to answer!
