The impending border wall construction in Texas threatens to mar or destroy an untold number of millennia-old rock art murals that stand in the coming wall’s path

It would run straight through the Seminole Canyon State Park, which is home to 27 murals, including the Fate Bell Shelter which was drawn perhaps 4,000 years ago (pictured here).

Why did the Trump administration file a proposal to repeal the Roadless Rule?

According to the Agriculture Department, the change is intended to reduce the “regulatory burden” and return decisions about forest management to a more local level; the US Forest Service and some Republican governors in affected states have pointed to fire management concerns and the need to clear out accumulated fuel in forests.

As Wall Street Journal reporter Robbie Gramer pointed out, however, only a tiny fraction of wildfires start in roadless areas of national forests (unsurprisingly, given the relative lack of people).

"The Trump administration moved on Tuesday to roll back an environmental rule that currently blocks road construction, and by extension most logging and mining activity, on tens of millions of acres of public forest land."

The end of "roadless rule" protections would open millions of acres of pristine forests to commercial use. Supporters say it will lead to better managed forests.

Scientists have a new name for a weather pattern reshaping how the West gets its water: so-called “snow-eater” heat waves.

The term, coined in a new study published in Science Advances, describes spring heat waves that can nearly double the rate of snowpack melt.
