There is a specific kind of broke that does not look like broke.
It looks like a new car in the driveway and nothing in savings.
It looks like a vacation on Instagram and a credit card balance that came home with you.
It looks like the right neighborhood, the right bag, the right appearance, and a level of financial anxiety that never fully goes away.
Keeping up is expensive. And the bill never stops coming.
Here is what makes it complicated: some of it is genuinely about joy. Buying the thing you wanted is not the problem. Buying the thing because someone else had it, or because you were afraid of what it meant if you did not, is a different conversation.
The question worth asking is not "can I afford this?"
The question is "am I buying this for me, or am I buying this for the version of me I think other people need to see?"
One of those answers leads to a purchase you feel good about. The other leads to a payment you resent.
You get to decide which one is driving.
What is one thing you bought for appearance, not necessity? You do not have to name the price. Just name the thing.
