I know it’s been a little while since I last published an episode of Demystifying Franchise Ownership, and I wanted to take a moment to connect with you all. In this episode, I revisit why I started the podcast in the first place and why I’ve decided to hit pause for now. When I first launched the show, my goal was to provide valuable insights and guidance about the franchise industry. But as life evolves, so do priorities. One of the big reasons I’m putting the podcast on hold is that I’m focusing on finishing a book. The book is all about helping franchisors and franchisees lay the foundations for a successful franchise marriage—starting with determining if franchising is the right path, selecting compatible partners, and nurturing a thriving, long-term relationship. Check out this quick episode to hear more!

Start the new year with a fresh mindset!

While New Year’s resolutions are great, sometimes the most powerful shift you can make is in your mindset. This year, instead of focusing solely on "what you want to do," think about "who you want to be."

A couple of resolutions are fine but imagine the transformation that could come from committing to a new mindset—one rooted in growth, gratitude, resilience, and possibility. Consider these mindset shifts: from '"It’s too late" to "It’s never too late," from "I don’t have enough time" to "I make time for what matters," and from "I can’t" to "How can I?"

The key is in how you approach each day, how you handle challenges, and how you celebrate your wins.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress. So, let’s kick off 2025 with a mindset that propels us forward.

What mindset shift will you make this year?

What will you do differently in 2025?

If you haven’t yet started your 2025 planning, don’t worry—it’s not too late! It’s never too late to reflect, adjust, and commit to growth.

Sometimes we feel like we must have everything planned perfectly ahead of time, but even if you haven’t yet mapped out your year, there’s still plenty of time to set intentions. Make a commitment to take the first two weeks of 2025 to plan your year with purpose. Reflect on where you are now and think about what you want to do differently—personally and professionally.

Start your year off strong by taking action, even if it’s later than planned. Better late than never, right?

Finding the right home is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make, and the same goes for selecting the perfect location for your business. Just like you wouldn’t settle for a home that doesn’t feel like the right fit for you and your family, it’s essential to take your time and carefully consider where you set up your business. A home should be a place where you can thrive, grow, and feel comfortable, and your business location should be no different.

When it comes to your franchise, remember that the location you choose is a long-term commitment, just like buying or renting a home. Don’t let anyone rush you into signing a lease you’re not fully comfortable with. Leases are long-term agreements and typically require a personal guarantee, so it’s crucial to be confident that the space is a good fit for both your business and your personal aspirations. Take the time to find the right place—because just like your home, the right location will support your success for years to come.

I had the pleasure of talking with Onyi Odunukwe, the CEO of Glo Tanning, on this episode. Onyi's journey into the world of tanning began at an early age, from a supplement store franchise to building a successful tanning brand that now spans across 16 states.

Onyi shares how Glo Tanning stands out in a competitive market, offering not only UV and spray tanning but also innovative automated spa services that are transforming the customer experience. He also talks about how they’ve centralized operations in a way that allows franchisees to focus on growth—from real estate support to customer service.

In addition to discussing Glo’s expansion to nearly 100 locations, Onyi outlines his innovative "Own Your Future" program, which empowers employees to become franchise owners. This program bridges the gap between those with operational experience but lacking capital and investors seeking hands-off opportunities.

Make sure to download this episode to learn more about how Onyi and Glo Tanning are reshaping the tanning industry.

As a franchisor, one of the most important decisions you’ll help your franchisees make is selecting the right brick-and-mortar location. The physical location of a franchise is a key factor in a franchisee's success, and ensuring that it aligns with your brand’s identity, target market, and operational needs is crucial. It’s essential to consider whether your brand is a destination brand, where customers will go out of their way to visit, or if it requires high street visibility to draw in passersby. Ensuring franchisees understand this and choose a location that meets your criteria is key to the long-term success of their business.

Franchisees often rely on franchisors for insights on site selection, lease negotiation, and even the build-out process. By helping them with these critical decisions, you ensure brand consistency across locations and contribute to their operational efficiency. A well-chosen location means quicker setup, smoother operations, and a faster return on investment. Supporting your franchisees in this process is an investment in the future of your brand.

**Lack of Transparency = Room for Misunderstanding**

In any relationship, whether personal or professional, clarity is key. When we're not transparent, assumptions fill the void and misunderstandings can quickly spiral.

A simple miscommunication can lead to frustration, confusion, or even hurt feelings. That’s why I always ask my husband why he wants to do something a particular way—it helps me understand the reasoning behind his actions and gives me better insight into his perspective.

Transparency isn’t just about sharing facts; it’s about creating trust and clarity. When we communicate openly, we pave the way for stronger, more supportive connections. Let’s choose transparency!

Transparency is crucial in a franchise community, as it builds trust and strengthens the relationship between franchisors and franchisees. Open communication helps franchisors better understand challenges, allowing them to offer tailored support, while franchisees feel valued and heard. This trust sets the foundation for long-term success and mutual respect.

Among franchisees, transparency fosters collaboration by encouraging the sharing of insights, best practices, and challenges. When franchisees are open with each other, it improves decision-making, boosts accountability, and allows everyone to learn and grow together. Transparency around franchisee performance is particularly vital, as it ensures that challenges are addressed early, allowing for necessary adjustments and growth.

By maintaining transparency, all parties can proactively address issues, ensure alignment, and drive sustainable success. Honest conversations about financial performance, operational concerns, and marketing strategies create a stronger, more resilient franchise community.

Tracking your personal finances is one of the most powerful ways to maintain quality control over your money. Without a clear understanding of where your money is going, it’s easy to overspend, miss out on savings opportunities, or lose sight of your financial goals.

That's why I make it a priority to track every expense—big or small. From my daily coffee runs to larger monthly bills, tracking helps me see patterns, spot areas where I can cut back, and make more intentional choices about where my money goes.

There are tons of solutions out there for tracking your finances, from apps to spreadsheets to pen and paper—so find the method that works best for you. The key is consistency. If you choose a tool but don’t actually use it, it’s not going to help.

The key to maintaining quality control in your finances is consistency. Regularly reviewing and tracking your spending not only keeps you accountable but also empowers you to make smarter financial decisions. Remember, every little bit adds up. By keeping track, you’re taking control of your financial future.

Are you a franchisor with quality control issues? Are these concerns coming directly from customers, are you uncovering issues through regular inspections, or both? Quality control problems can seriously harm your brand reputation and affect your bottom line. It’s crucial to tackle these issues with a sense of urgency to prevent further damage.

Step one: Identify the root cause or causes. Is it inconsistent training, a breakdown in communication, or operational inconsistencies at certain franchise locations? Once you pinpoint the causes, take the necessary steps to address it, from revising training programs to incentivizing quality performance. Equipping your franchisees with the right tools and support is essential to ensuring they can maintain the high standards your customers expect.

Consistency is key to long-term success in franchising, and tackling quality control issues head-on will protect the integrity of your brand. Don’t wait for the problem to escalate—take action and remind your customers why they chose your brand in the first place. With the right strategies in place, you can turn unhappy customers into loyal advocates and elevate your franchise's reputation.

Managing your personal finances with a clear cash flow plan can do wonders for reducing stress, especially as the holiday season approaches. By tracking your inflows and outflows, you can better understand where your money is going and make sure you’re prepared for any upcoming expenses. This kind of planning allows you to stay in control and avoid the last-minute scramble that often comes with holiday spending.

One of the best ways to use cash flow planning during the holidays is by creating a shopping list with set budgets for each gift and sticking to that list. Whether it's for friends, family, or coworkers, sticking to a gift budget keeps your finances in check, preventing the stress of post-holiday debt. With a clear budget and thoughtful planning, you can focus on the joy of the season without the financial anxiety.
