McLean County Sheriffโs Office begins Fourth of July crackdown on impaired drivers and seat belt law violators
Bloomington, IL โ McLean County Sheriffโs Office announced plans for an Independence Day High-Visibility Enforcement Campaign with a focus on โFatal 4โ enforcement, to include impaired drivers, seatbelt violations, distracted driving, speeding, and Scottโs Law violations. The safety campaign will run from ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ ๐๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ to encompass three summer weekends leading up to and after the holiday.
โWeโre asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,โ said Sheriff Matt Lane. โItโs simple: If youโre driving, donโt drink or use drugs. Also, put your cellphone down and focus on the roadway. Our officers will be out in full force to keep impaired and distracted drivers off the road.โ
The McLean County Sheriffโs Office will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriffโs departments for the increased statewide enforcement effort.
โThis Fourth of July, designate a sober driver and donโt let friends or family members drive under the influence,โ said Sheriff Matt Lane.
Other important tips include:
โข Give your designated driver your keys before you go out.
โข If you are drunk or impaired by cannabis or other drugs, call a taxi, take mass transit, use your favorite ride-sharing service or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
โข Promptly report drunk drivers to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911.
โข Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. Not only is it the law, but itโs also your best defense against an impaired driver.
The Illinois Independence Day enforcement campaign is funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies across the state. Itโs reinforced with IDOTโs โItโs Not a Gameโ media campaign, which shares real stories of Illinois residents lost in fatal crashes.
