WHO’S ON YOUR BUS?

Back in 2020, I facilitated a Leaders Are Readers book club, and one of the first books we tackled was The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon.

I’ve been thinking about that book a lot lately after several conversations with clients about “energy vampires” on their teams.

Every team has people who bring energy, elevate morale, create momentum and make customers want to come back.

And then there are those who drain the energy right out of the room.

As leaders, our job isn’t to simply tolerate it.

Care enough to help people change.

And care enough about the rest of your team and your culture to transform or remove the energy vampires when necessary.

Your culture is too important to leave to chance.

So take a look around…
Who’s on your bus?

And maybe more importantly:
What kind of energy are YOU bringing to the bus?

WHEN THE LEADER BECOMES THE BOTTLENECK

Oh man, this was me for sure. I have found that the great leaders create momentum but sometimes, in trying to protect the mission and culture, they accidentally become the thing slowing it down.

As your business grows, ask:

👉 What decisions are people waiting on me for?

👉 What am I holding onto that someone else could own?

👉 Have our systems outgrown our business?

Build for where you are going, not just where you are.

And remember:
If everyone needs your approval, congrats...you have become the system!

It's WINSday!

Big or small, celebrate your wins!

Wins build confidence, create momentum, and remind you and your team of what’s working.

Don’t be so focused on the next goal that you forget to recognize how far you’ve come.

And no, celebrating a win does not mean you get to take the rest of the week off! 😃

Celebrate the momentum and progress. Learn from the wins and keep moving forward.

I call mine “Wins on Wednesdays.”

What's your win this week?

New Month/New Mindset/New Start

Which Area of Your Life Needs Your Attention?

Life has a funny way of getting us "out of balance". One area gets all our attention while another quietly waves from the corner saying, “Hey… remember me?” 😂

Take a quick look at these 4 life segments:

🔑 Business & Career — Are you growing or just staying busy?

🔑 Financial Independence — Are you building the future you want?

🔑 Health & Fitness — Are you taking care of the machine that makes everything else possible?

🔑 Family & Relationships — Are the people who matter most getting your best...or just what’s left?

You don't have to fix everything at once.

Pick the one area that needs your attention most and take one intentional step today.

Balance doesn't happen by accident. You have to work at it.

4 THINGS YOU CAN CONTROL TODAY

You can't control other people, the weather, traffic, or who's being difficult. 😂

But you can control:

1️⃣ Your ATTITUDE
2️⃣ Your EFFORT
3️⃣ Your BEHAVIOR
4️⃣ Your ACTIONS

Stop worrying about what you can't control and focus on what you can.

Control the controllables. Show up. Do the work. Make people around you better.

That's leadership. 👊

☀️ SUMMER SEPARATION SEASON is here. 🇺🇸

The week of the Fourth of July is when a lot of people mentally check out.

They'll tell themselves:
"Everyone's on vacation anyway."
"I'll get serious after the holiday."
"Business always slows down this time of year."
"I'll wait until next week."

Sound familiar? While most people are hitting the brakes, the best leaders are quietly creating separation.

They're following up.
They're making the phone call.
They're strengthening relationships.
They're planning for the second half of the year.
They're doing the work that compounds while everyone else is coasting.

Don't get me wrong, enjoy the holiday. Spend time with family. Fire up the grill. Watch the fireworks. 🇺🇸🌭🎆

But don't let one holiday week turn into a month of lost momentum.

Success doesn't take the summer off!

Happy July 1!

The moment we think we've arrived is usually the moment we stop growing.

Contrary to popular belief, leaders don't get paid for knowing everything.

Leaders get paid for making good decisions.

And the best decisions usually come from leaders who are willing to learn, ask questions, seek advice, and admit they don't have all the answers.

The strongest leaders I know aren't the smartest people in every room.

They're the most coachable.

They listen more than they talk.
They stay curious.
They seek different perspectives.

And they're humble enough to say:
"I don't know... but let's figure it out."

What's one area of your business or leadership where you need to spend less time having the answers and more time asking the right questions?

Most people spend more time planning a vacation than planning their future. 😳

One of my favorite questions is:
"What is your unique area of excellence?"

In other words...
👉 What do you do exceptionally well?
👉 What is your competitive edge?
👉 What do people consistently come to you for?

Too many leaders drift through their careers hoping things will work out.

The most successful people I know do something different.

They get clear on:
✅ Their values
✅ Their vision
✅ Their purpose
✅ Their goals
✅ The skills they need to develop
✅ The habits they need to build

Then they go to work.

Here's the Focalpoint truth:
Your future isn't something you discover.
It's something you create.

And if you're not intentionally designing it, someone else is probably designing it for you.

So here's a question:

If we sat down for coffee and fast-forwarded 5 years, what would have to happen for you to say: "This is exactly the life, business, and career I hoped for."

Think about it.
(And no, "winning the lottery" is not a strategic plan. 😉)

"I just need to work harder."

I hear this all the time from business owners and leaders.

The problem?

Working harder on the wrong thing is like flooring the gas pedal while sitting in a traffic jam 🚗

Every goal has a bottleneck.
Every business has a constraint.
Every leader has something that's slowing progress.

The question isn't:
"What do I need to do more of?"

The better question is:
"What's the ONE thing that's holding me back?"

Maybe it's:
✅ A difficult conversation you're avoiding
✅ A skill you need to develop
✅ A team member in the wrong seat
✅ Your own habits, beliefs, or mindset

Here's the Focalpoint reality:
🔵 Most of the obstacles standing between us and our goals aren't external. They're internal.

As a coach, I've found that breakthroughs rarely come from doing 10 more things. They come from identifying and removing the ONE thing that's creating the bottleneck.

So here's your challenge this week:
"What's the biggest constraint preventing me, my team, or my business from reaching the next level?"

Find it.
Attack it.
Remove it.

What are you truly excellent at?

Not good.
Not average.
Not "I can do it if I have to."

But EXCELLENT.

Here's what I often find...
Many business owners spend most of their time doing things they aren't great at, don't enjoy, and frankly shouldn't be doing.

Then they wonder why they're exhausted. 😄

One of the exercises I recently worked through with a client challenged them to identify:
✅ What activities bring them the most joy
✅ What activities give them energy
✅ What activities drain them
✅ What skills they need to develop to be in the top 10% of their field over the next 1-3 years

The reality is this:
When you're operating in your area of excellence, you perform at a higher level, enjoy the work more, and energize the people around you. When you're spending your day doing tasks that should be delegated, automated, or eliminated, you're simply wasting energy.

As owners/leaders, we don't get paid for being busy. We get paid for creating value.

So here's your leadership challenge for the day:
👉 What is one task you're still doing that someone else could do?

Your future growth may depend less on working harder and more on spending more time in your area of excellence.

And if you're still spending three hours trying to fix the office printer... I can confidently tell you that's probably NOT your area of excellence. 😂
