It's that time !

Happy mulching season - the time in America when people spend time, effort, and money into throwing away their own resources (so you can grow free food with it). Such are these odd times - might as well take advantage of it.
It's interesting how so much of the highest leverage places in the work of regeneration simply involves waste steam diversion - "re-placing misplaced resources" - the idea of "waste as simply a resource misplaced" is good to recall.
This autumn I managed to get about 100 yards of wood chips - multiple piles like this all over the homestead - fertility bombs - now to put down over the coming winter while the ground is hard and the skiing sucks. Been giving away free beer and more to tree services for ten plus years in the hopes of this level of windfall - I've only been lucky enough to get the odd 5-10 yards every year or two normally - listening as i do each day for the sound of a distant chipper at work in my valley. This fall they had been pruning the power lines here and had already dumped about 150 yards or brown gold over a road bank where fill and other trash is also dumped before I managed to divert this value stream. Many of you in more populated places have even more abundant access to such free food.
And it's interesting to remember that the most productive homesteads and gardens are invariably the places where the gardener(s) takes the most time to seriously mulch and/or compost. Good gardening is good nutrient management - except when it's dependent on off-site resources. And the nutrients are there for the harvesting.
For those of you establishing new plantings on sod, don't forget that the coming "shopping season" brings on the best cardboard harvesting conditions - behind malls and plazas where reliably epic harvesting is commonly found - appliance boxes being the ultimate.

Tredding mindfully in the aftermath

Tredding mindfully in the aftermath of Beruit, Paris and Baghdad

"Personal agendas and heated opinions border on dangerous this early in the aftermath. Kneejerk reactions are the stuff of wars — at best serving to divide us
Before we take one more step down the road to reform and recovery, we must each ask ourselves this simple question:

Do I choose to root my reactions in love or in fear?

Fear gives rise to panic, rage, anger, resentment, hatred, worry, cynicism, judgement, and selfishness.

Love births kindness, generosity, peace, compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, empathy, understanding, and healing.

Both provide fuel for action, each begets more of the same, and no one gets to make the choice for you." -Beth Berry"
