Yesterday, the Chamber was pleased to welcome Hamilton County ReSource's Senior Outreach Specialist Elise Erhart for an eye-opening presentation on how food waste impacts the environment.
Elise shared the reality that home consumers produce more food waste in the area than restaurants and discarded food that lands in a landfill generates methane... a potent greenhouse gas that significantly contributes to air pollution.
The good news? Last Mile Food Rescue, Inc. and others have made great strides partnering with businesses, hospitals and schools to reduce food waste while helping residents facing food insecurity.
There are also a number of practical, actionable tips everyone can implement at home, including:
✅ Understanding food date labels to reduce unnecessary waste
✅ Properly storing fruits and vegetables to extend freshness
✅ Using surplus ingredients in soups, smoothies, and other recipes
✅ Donating or using food scraps to feed animals, when appropriate
✅ Starting a compost pile to keep organic materials out of landfills or utilizing local drop-off sites such as Blue Ash Elementary
Small changes in our personal kitchens can amount to a big difference! Thank you, again, to Hamilton Co. ReSource for educating the chamber on how to reduce waste, save money, and protect our region's natural resources.
