Paddlefish Solar Project

Paddlefish Solar Project We partner with local farmers and landowners to diversify their income while preserving farmland that can return to its original use after the project's life.

Paddlefish Solar, developed by EDF Renewables, will power 64,000 homes with clean, American-made solar energy, supporting local farmers, schools, and the community with $350M+ investment in Wells & Huntington Counties, Indiana. Paddlefish Solar Project, developed by EDF Renewables North America—a leader in renewable energy for over 35 years—will deliver enough clean energy to power 64,000 homes in

Indiana. Our $350 million project brings significant long-term gains to the local economy, supporting over $90 million in tax revenue for schools, safety services, and community needs. Built using American-made panels, Paddlefish Solar enhances local infrastructure. Our team believes in open, ongoing community engagement: providing accurate information, educational opportunities, and minimizing visual impacts through thoughtful planning and screening. Together, we're building a brighter, more sustainable future for Indiana.

Learn more about land stewardship and solar development from our recent webinar.

We explored how well-planned solar sites can support local environmental benefits, including improved soil and water quality, increased bird and insect diversity, and even potential yield gains for nearby farms through stronger pollinator habitats.

Just like our recently approved Ohio project, Eastern Cottontail Solar, Paddlefish Solar will create hundreds of jobs during construction and long-term positions for operations and maintenance. Local businesses will also benefit from new demand for materials, equipment, and services, supporting economic growth across the county.

Solar panels used today are engineered for tough weather and tested to national safety standards. They are made to withstand hail, high winds, and freezing conditions while staying sealed and secure. Data from across the country shows solar projects remain safe and reliable through even the strongest storms.

Fun fact: Sheep can help care for the land around solar panels, which are made from non-toxic materials like glass, aluminum, and silicon.

The panels can be safely recycled, and when their work is done, the land can return to farming just like before.

Did you know?: Paddlefish Solar’s $350 million investment includes more than $12 million in funds for Huntington and Wells Counties to be paid out by the end of the third year of project operations, guaranteed by legally binding agreements with each county. That money goes directly into county budgets and ensures adequate or increased funding for schools, first responders, and roads, without the need to raise taxes on residents.

Unlike other forms of residential, commercial, or industrial development that use significant amounts of concrete and create large impervious surfaces, solar projects are a temporary, low impact land use that can help benefit the soil and provide other local environmental benefits, and even incorporate agricultural uses with the project footprint.

At the end of a project's life, steel piles are pulled out of the ground, panels are recycled or reused, and the land can return to full agricultural use. All of this is guaranteed by multi-million-dollar decommissioning securities required by county governments.

For farmers, solar means reliable lease payments that provide stability during down years. Diversifying into solar can help farmers and landowners reinvest elsewhere in their operations and keep land in the family for the next generation.

Our commitment to stewardship extends beyond the life of the equipment we use to produce energy. Solar panels power communities for decades, and when they reach the end of their life, more than 90% of the materials can be recycled.
