This is what it looks like when small business owners stop managing symptoms and start doing the real work.

BOP Clients: Different sizes. Different challenges. One room.

This morning we kicked off Week 1 of Cultivating Ownership — a four-week collective training built around one honest diagnosis: the breakdown in most small businesses is not a knowledge problem. The tools are built. The vision is written. The processes are documented.

The breakdown is a culture problem.

A flattery problem.

A "we stopped telling the truth and started keeping the peace" problem.

So this morning we started there.

We talked about what it costs a business when feedback gets replaced by comfort. When honest correction gets softened into encouragement. When the owner stops expecting the standard because the conversation feels too hard.

And then we did something most leadership training never does. We stopped talking about the team — and started talking about ourselves.

Every owner in this room opened their job role. Read it. And answered three questions in writing before anyone spoke:

What am I actually doing at the standard this role requires? What have I been doing below the standard — and who knows it but has said nothing? What feedback have I been withholding from someone in this room — and why?

Then the owner went first. Every time.

What happened next is hard to describe. But when a construction company owner and an attorney and a property manager and a landscaper and an elected official all sit in the same room and tell the truth at the same time — something shifts that a one-on-one coaching conversation cannot cause.
