It was a great opportunity to work with the .yp and speak at the 2026 Young Professionals Summit in Myrtle Beach, spending time with the next generation of forestry professionals.
The future of forestry depends on educating young professionals on how forestry, wildlife, habitat, and landowner objectives all work together. We had the opportunity to discuss wild turkey habitat and how changing conditions across a property can influence what turkeys need throughout the year.

There is rarely one practice or prescription that works everywhere. Good management comes from understanding the land, defining the objective, and knowing when to adjust as conditions change.

We appreciate the opportunity to work alongside the Forestry Association and help pass along the knowledge and experience that will shape the next generation of forestry and land management.

The best deer stand locations aren’t found—they’re built into the property.

When we design a recreational property, we don’t simply react to where deer are today. We use prescribed fire, selective herbicide, and other management tools to shape food and cover so deer use becomes more predictable when hunting season arrives. Stand locations are central to that design—not an afterthought.

A stand overlooking heavy deer activity in July may be nearly worthless in October. Seasonal food sources, bedding cover, and the movement between them must be identified before deciding where a stand belongs.

Food plots attract deer, but outside the rut, they seldom pull mature bucks into the open during daylight. A better setup often focuses on secure bedding cover and natural food sources. Carefully placed shooting lanes—not wholesale clearing—allow hunters to see and intercept movement without removing the security cover mature bucks need to move before dark.

Wind and access matter, the habitat design must consider both.

Want to grow bigger deer? Stop focusing on winter.

One of the most common misconceptions in land management is that whitetails require the most nutrition during cold weather. The biological reality is that April through August is when their nutritional demands actually peak.

What a deer eats from late spring through early fall directly dictates antler growth, lactation for fawns, and overall herd health. If you want to see mature, high-scoring bucks on your property this fall, the critical work happens during the summer.

Killing hardwoods in the name of wildlife management!? Whether managing for deer or turkeys, hardwood drains, flats, creek bottoms, or river bottoms can be one of the most impactful areas to improve on your property. Many times, these areas are a mix of species that create full canopy shading out everything at ground level. Masting trees are providing the largest benefit to wildlife and many times are crowded by other less desirable trees like sweetgum, poplar, or maple. Removing those less desirable species can make room for the canopies of your more desirable trees to grow. Bigger canopies on oaks producing acorns = more acorns. At the same time, the additional light can provide some much needed cover and additional forage for the many months of the year when acorns are not falling. One note here- Dr Harper mentioned girdling your trees to kill them, he also treats the girdle wounds with the Dr Harper mix of 40% Garlon 3A, 10% Imazapyr, and 50% water. Once again, timing matters!

Prescribed fire does more than remove accumulated litter. The frequency of fire—and the month in which you burn— influence which plants respond afterward.
Frequent fire generally helps maintain a more open, herbaceous understory. Longer intervals allow shrubs and woody vegetation to become more dominant.

The season matters too. Dormant-season fire can reduce litter and temporarily set back woody growth, while growing-season fire places greater stress on actively growing shrubs and hardwood sprouts. A February burn may produce a very different plant response than a burn in May.

That does not make one timing right and the other wrong. The right fire regime depends on your objectives for deer, turkey, quail, timber, or a combination of goals.

How effective is your current trapping program? Are you running a trap per 20-25 acres everyday all year? In some states, it is possible to obtain permits to trap all year. Where legal, we recommend a trap monitoring system that allows managers to role into the shop in the morning, scan all of the traps (100 traps takes 3-5 minutes), then go to those that are tripped vs riding to all 100 traps everyday. It is the most effective way to trap we have found. This only works on live traps, not footholds. So, we are primarily targeting raccoons, opossums, skunks, and armadillos with these. This makes setting steal for coyotes and bobcats way more productive because we are not catching a lot of nest predators. Want more information on this system?
