One of the most common questions we hear is: "If the business owner took money out of the company, doesn't that automatically count as income?"

Not necessarily.

Income and distributions often get lumped together in everyday conversations, yet they can represent very different things depending on the structure of the business and the circumstances involved.

It can affect support calculations, business valuation discussions, and the overall financial picture presented to the court. Looking at one figure without asking how and why the money was paid can leave important questions unanswered.

Financial records usually tell the story. Tax returns, accounting records, payroll, shareholder distributions, and cash flow all provide pieces of the puzzle.

If business ownership is part of your case, it's worth adding this article to your reading list.

One mistake we see from time to time is assuming every business should look the same on paper.

A medical practice doesn't operate like a construction company.

A restaurant doesn't generate revenue the same way a software company does.

Seasonal businesses have different cash flow patterns than year-round operations.

Even two businesses in the same industry may have very different financial profiles depending on their customers, ownership structure, and stage of growth.

That's why context is important in business valuation and forensic accounting.

Before drawing conclusions, it's important to ask how this particular business earns money, spends money, and serves its customers.

Those answers help explain why certain financial decisions make sense and why others deserve a closer look.

Every business has a story. The financial records help tell it.

As a forensic CPA, I don't get excited by million-dollar wire transfers. I get excited by the $5 transaction that shouldn't exist.

Why?

Because that $5 charge can tell me something far more valuable than the amount itself: discovery is incomplete.

One transaction outside the known universe of accounts, credit cards, or payment platforms is often the first clue that there are assets or financial relationships no one has disclosed.

People who conceal money rarely hand over the records they don't want you to find. They hide accounts, payment apps, businesses, and investments outside the scope of discovery.

But very few people execute a perfect cover-up. Eventually, they leave a breadcrumb.

That seemingly insignificant $5 transaction may lead to:
• An undisclosed bank account.
• A hidden payment platform.
• A business relationship that was never disclosed.
• An entirely separate financial ecosystem.

In forensic accounting, we don't chase the biggest transactions. We chase the transactions that don't fit.

Because when one piece of the puzzle is outside the picture, there's usually a lot more missing.

Financial statements give you the headlines. The general ledger gives you the details.

Large entries labeled "miscellaneous."
Recurring payments to unfamiliar vendors.
Personal expenses recorded as business costs.
Transfers between accounts.

Any one of these may have a perfectly reasonable explanation. But you won't find that explanation by looking at summarized financial statements alone.

The general ledger lets us see the transactions behind the totals, and sometimes, the pattern matters more than the size of any single transaction.

In our latest article, Chris Aglio takes a closer look at the general ledger and why it can be such a valuable source of information in divorce litigation.

Sometimes the most important thing you find isn't a six-figure transaction.

It's the small one that keeps showing up. https://myemail.constantcontact.com/FAMSEG--The-Family-Law-Section-eNews-May-2026.html?soid=1101406933607&aid=0IXGix6SQCQ

A balance sheet tells you how much cash and debt a company has.

It doesn't tell you why they're there.

A business may be holding more cash while also carrying more debt for perfectly ordinary reasons. The question is what happened and whether it matters to the valuation.

Was the debt used to fund operations?
Purchase equipment?
Make a distribution?
Build liquidity?
Was the cash generated by the business or borrowed?

Those answers can matter when valuing a closely held business in a divorce case.

That's why cash and debt shouldn't just be numbers pulled from the balance sheet. They need context.

We took a closer look at this issue in our latest article. https://www.somanforensics.com/post/watching-debt-and-cash-on-a-business-tax-return

"This case should be pretty straightforward."

In my experience, those are dangerous words.

Because "straightforward" has a way of changing once you put the tax returns, bank statements, general ledger, payroll, and financial statements next to each other.

One number doesn't match.
A transaction needs context.
Something ordinary suddenly deserves a second look.

It doesn't mean something is wrong.

It means there's another question to ask.

And that's usually where the interesting part begins.

Today we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We remember the families forever changed by that day.

We honor the first responders who answered the call without hesitation, along with the countless individuals who stepped forward to help their neighbors in the hours and days that followed.

Their courage, service, and compassion continue to leave a lasting mark.

As we reflect today, we also recognize the resilience shown by communities across our country and the importance of supporting one another through life's most difficult moments.

May we always remember those we lost, those who served, and the strength that carried so many people forward.
