Thinking about buying an RV?

Before you spend hours walking a dealership lot, do yourself a favor: make an appointment.

Not just with any salesperson—try to find the best one.

Start by reading Google reviews and looking for salespeople who are mentioned repeatedly by name. If you can’t identify one, call the dealership and ask for the General Sales Manager. Tell them you’re a serious buyer and ask who they would recommend as their most experienced and customer-focused salesperson.

Then schedule a weekday appointment.

Why a weekday? Because that’s when the salesperson has the time to focus on you, answer questions, and, if you already have a unit in mind, have it ready, opened up, plugged in, and prepared for a proper walkthrough.

Buying an RV shouldn’t feel rushed. A little preparation can save you a lot of frustration and help you make a better decision.

Shopping for an RV? Before you fall in love with the floorplan, take some time to learn about the dealership.

Do your homework first.

Spend some time online researching both the RVs you’re interested in and the dealership itself. The buying experience is only part of the ownership experience.

Read the reviews carefully.

Sort by Lowest Rating First and look for patterns. One unhappy customer doesn’t tell you much, but repeated comments about service, warranty work, communication, financing, or delivery can be very revealing.

Then sort by Highest Rating First and look for detailed reviews from real customers. Pay attention to comments about how the dealership handled issues after the sale, not just during the purchase.

Visit the dealership.

Walk through the service department if possible. Observe how organized it is, talk with other RV owners, and ask about their experiences. You’ll often learn things that never appear in advertisements or brochures.

Learn about the people.

Many dealerships have employees who have built strong reputations over the years. Reviews can often help identify knowledgeable staff members who consistently take care of customers.

Remember: you’re not just choosing an RV—you’re choosing the people who may be helping you maintain and enjoy it for years to come.

After 65 years around RVs, I’ve learned that the dealership can have as much impact on your ownership experience as the RV itself.

RV SEASON IS HERE – A 5 MINUTE CHECK CAN SAVE A 5 HOUR DISASTER

As thousands of RVs hit the road this season, here’s a friendly reminder from someone who’s spent a lifetime around them:

Check your tire pressures before every travel day.

Use a TPMS. Tires rarely fail without giving some warning first.

Put your hand on each wheel hub when you stop. One that’s noticeably hotter than the others may be telling you something important. (Don’t actually touch it with your bare hand. Just get a hot pad that you use for this surface. Keep it under the front seat or wherever and use it with each stop. You might prevent something seriously wrong from going to catastrophic.)

Check your lug nuts, hitch, safety chains, breakaway cable, and lights before pulling out.

Walk around your rig every single time you stop for fuel. Look underneath. Look at your tires.

Look at your roofline. Problems are much cheaper when caught early.

Don’t let your fuel tank get too low. The cheapest fuel isn’t always worth the stress.

Weather can change faster than your plans. Check the route ahead, not just where you’re sitting.

Slow down. A few extra miles per hour isn’t worth risking your family, your RV, or someone else’s life.

And most importantly:

If you’re new to RVing, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Every experienced RVer was once standing in a campground wondering why the water pump wouldn’t stop running, where the sewer hose connected, or why the refrigerator wasn’t getting cold.

We’ve all been there.

Travel safe.
Be patient.
Help each other.

The goal is for everyone to arrive.

For anyone new to researching dealers or service centers, here’s a simple way I use Google reviews:

Don’t sort by “most relevant.”

Start with lowest rated.
You’re not looking for one angry person. Every business has those. You’re looking for patterns. If multiple people describe the same issue; long service delays, communication problems, surprise fees…that’s worth paying attention to.

Then flip to highest rated.
Look for detailed reviews that mention specific sales or service staff. Usually there are one or two people who consistently get named.

If you’re serious about a unit, call ahead and ask for an appointment with that person.
It’s okay to ask for the RV to be set up, plugged in, and ready to show you how everything works. That’s part of doing it right.

Finally, sort by most recent.
That shows whether things are improving, staying the same, or slipping.

You’re not looking for perfect.
You’re looking for patterns and direction.
