Pleased to announce today that I have stepped on with the Appraisal Board as their Book and Ephemera Specialist.

Does this change anything for South Mountain Appraisals, LLC ? Nope.... not a darn thing. This is another exciting opportunity for me in the subcontracting world of remote appraisals for Books and Ephemera. Looking forward to more learning opportunities and exposure to all things paper!

Back up amd running this morning! I have had a busy week with multiple appraisals and multiple appointments. Here we go though for our celebration of the 250th. We have a partially printed printed document signed by James Madison, as President, and James Monroe, as Secretary of State. New York, December 8, 1812 ships passport. With two wafer seals, countersigned by Collector of the Port of New York David Gelston, and witnessed in all four languages.

A four-language 1812 ship's papers boldly signed by President James Madison (1751-1836) and future President James Monroe (1758-1831) as Secretary of State. The passport was granted to Captain Lemuel Bourne, the captain of the schooner Zebra departing New York for Bordeaux with a cargo of potash (ashes) and cotton.

Join us at South Mountain Appraisals, LLC as we celebrate the 250th Anniversary by spotlighting the different Presidents with a "Guess the Value" on various documents including, but not limited to letters, land grants, and military commissions. Basically, I post a document in the morning, you guess, and I post the appraised fair market value in the afternoon.

See you tomorrow for guessing!

As a books and ephemera specialist for a company out ot Manhattan, I have appraised autographs from every single president before President Reagan. Please note, due to NDAs, I will be posting representative items of what I have appraised.

Not getting much love on the autographs so far! Am I stumping you? I will admit, it is a lot of research research for some of these! Let's move onto our third president, Thomas Jefferson today and our fourth, president, James Madison.

Surprisingly, I see a lot of these "pirate passports" This document is signed by both President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State James Madison, folio on vellum, Washington, August 7, 1806, with an engraving at top of a sailing ship and a harbor scene dominated by a lighthouse, being a passport for the Ship Two Marys out of New York, master Caleb Johnson. A previous ship of Johnson’s, The Ann, had been seized by the Spanish a year earlier. Johnson’s experience, having two ships under his command seized in a two year period, illustrates how disruptive to American commerce the war in Europe was proving to be.

These passports, given to ships rather than individuals, were issued to U.S. vessels engaged in foreign trade, and are among the most attractive of presidential signed documents.

See you tomorrow as we explore James Monroe.

Today we are on our second president, John Adams (1735-1826). We have a letter signed "John Adams" as President, "To the Grand Jury of the county of Norfolk in the State of Massachusetts," Quincy, 28 August 1798.

President John Adams thanks supporters in the wake of the XYZ Affair and the Quasi-War with France. The revelation of the XYZ Affair (so-called for the unnamed French agents it involved) galvanized public opinion against France and gave Adams the political support necessary to wage his limited naval war between 1798 and 1800. In April 1798 Adams released details of the XYZ correspondence to Congress at which time public support spiked – along with anti-French sentiment due to the unsavory details of French efforts at bribery. The present letter is Adams's reply to one of many addresses that came to him from all over the country in support of his administration. He comments: "I really question whether France ever doubted of the spirit of Americans. She depended more on their ignorance of the world and their unsuspecting innocence and simplicity. The present rulers in France have indeed discovered by symptoms that cannot be misunderstood, a contempt for our government and national character.”

Arrived in Pine Grove this morning after the rain to find an empty beach. I am relaxing this morning before I have a meeting with a remote client from Kentucky.

I am also currently working on a large appraisal of Presidential and Early American signatures for a remote client out of Los Angeles for insurance purposes.

I do love spending some time in the South Moutains!
