SO HERE IS A FIRST… for me in Japan. There was a maintenance train derailment on the Shinkansen tracks at 3:40am between Kyoto and Nagoya, and it has affected everything systemwide. I show up at Kyoto station for my short 15-minute Shinkansen ride to Shin-Osaka (the opposite direction) to mass chaos. All trains are delayed and indeterminate amount of time, and many canceled entirely (including mine).
Hopped on a local train there (en route now). I’m glad I allowed for extra time, because I’ll be only slightly late.
Shinkansen bullet trains were suspended between Tokyo and Nagoya from Monday's first scheduled services due to a derailment involving two maintenance vehicles on a section near the central Japan city, the operator says.
