I had a blast sharing strengths with an amazing community of leaders at the annual GBA conference. Bottomline - "Someone you lead right now may possess untapped superpowers—hidden strengths waiting to be discovered and developed that with the right leadership, could unlock those strengths, transforming not only your organization but also the course of a life. It’s the ultimate win-win scenario."

What do people need most from their leaders? The answer might surprise you.

A Gallup report, in collaboration with the World Governments Summit, surveyed over 30,000 participants across 52 countries. The findings revealed four qualities that matter most: hope, trust, compassion, and stability—with hope rating highest.

Hope, defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "a feeling of expectation and a desire for a certain thing to happen; a feeling of trust," gives people confidence in the future. Gallup's findings show that hope is the most valued quality.

Moreover, the research indicates that when leaders cultivate hope, along with trust, compassion, and stability, they enhance wellbeing and reduce suffering. According to Gallup, "Employees who strongly agree that their leader makes them feel enthusiastic about the future are 69 times more likely to be engaged in their work."

Creating a sense of hope makes a significant difference!

You don't want to miss this interview! Toward the end of the conversation, Simon Sinek talks about hope when he is asked, "How does somebody build hope in a pessimistic world?" He said, "Very easy. Surround yourself with people who are hopeful. It's contagious. If you find yourself surrounded by downers, hang around with people who see the world as half full and watch what it does to you. I believe that even in darkness, there is light. I believe that in every tragedy there is a lesson." Enjoy!

College retention can be a challenge with as nearly 19% first-year students, enrolled in a 4 year program, not returning for their second semester. A Strengths-based intervention can help a student understand their natural strengths, and can help them understand how to better manage their higher education and college life.

“School tests weaknesses. Life rewards strengths.

Spending more time on our weakest areas is tempting, but life mostly rewards us for investing in our strengths. Imagine a student who struggles with math but excels at writing. In school, they might spend hours raising their math grades from a C to a B. However, spending the same time on writing might move them from an A to an A+. Focusing on math makes sense when you're taught to think in grades. It doesn't make sense if you think about life. The difference between an A and an A+ in writing ability might mean the difference between a New York Times bestseller read by millions and a book that only 100 people read.”

Address weaknesses only to the point where they stop holding you back. Then concentrate effort on your strengths.

This quote resonated with me after leading a workshop on Maximizing Your Team through Strengths-Based Powerful Partnerships. It was a transformative moment when one of the leaders questioned their own value, and half the room raised their hands, acknowledging their need for this leader’s complementary strengths. After the workshop, the leader commented, "I would be lying if I said I didn't need this today." I can't believe I get paid to do this work!

"So admit it: You stink at some things. You have blind spots, weaknesses, areas in which others seem to perform effortlessly while you struggle just to be average. You are also overly modest about your strengths. What seems to be no big deal to you is difficult for others. Your strengths are stronger and your weaknesses weaker than you realize. You need help. You are also precisely the help someone else needs."

The best partnerships happen when you and someone who has strengths that complement yours join forces, say the authors of Power of 2. Your strengths cancel out your partner's weaknesses, and vice versa. You accomplish together what could not be done separately.
