The loss of one of our own, and the good that came from it.

Hurricane Ian caused an incredible amount of loss and damage. It affected millions and will cost billions of dollars. Those were the headlines, and they are nothing to make light of. So many Home Watch companies and their clients will feel the effects of the storm for years to come. But these losses are material. They are things that can and will be replaced. Early last month we were made aware of a loss that hits close to home for the entire Southwest Florida Home Watch community.
Donna Lopez and her sister Julie Parker operated Mockingbird Home Watch from their homes in Bokeelia, FL, a small island off the northern tip of Cape Coral. When Ian hit, their homes were destroyed leaving them and their families homeless. In addition to the destruction and adversity around them, Donna was seriously diabetic. She and her husband José, quickly decided to relocate to Laurinburg, North Carolina and stay there until things could be sorted out. But that was not to be. Because of the disruption in medications caused by the hurricane, Donna’s blood sugar spiked so high that it put her into cardiac arrest. The decision was made to put her in a medically induced coma to try and manage all that was happening to her. Soon after, the doctors announced that she was brain-dead, and as per Donna’s wishes to be an organ donor, was kept alive for another two days to arrange for transplants. Because of Donna’s selflessness, five lives were saved. Out of tragedy comes good.
We will miss Donna and will aways remember her selfless act. We hope it inspires others to do the same.
In 2023, the National Home Watch Association has committed to donate a portion of each membership fee to the National Foundation for Transplants in Donna’s memory and honor. We are happy to accept donations which we will forward to them. Here is the link for the National Foundation for Transplants website: https://transplants.org/
The family has also set up a Go Fund Me page for Donna’s final expenses. Here is the link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/eqd5a4-start-over?sharetype=teams&member=22426947&pc=fb_co_campmgmt_m&rcid=r01-166735399099-1b32ffae5a5111ed

We’ve earned our accreditation for the second year in a row with the National Home Watch Association

We could not be where we are today without your support, thank you! 👏 🏡

Greetings!

Mockingbird Home Watch of Bokeelia, Florida, has earned accreditation from the NHWA for the second year.

Sisters and co-owners Donna Lopez and Julie Parker relocated to Florida from Massachusetts in 2011. In Massachusetts, Julie worked as a document specialist at a biological laboratory and as a private nanny for multiple families. Donna worked with both the young and old as a private nanny and elder companion for multiple families. In Florida, Donna continued to care for people as both a nanny and elder companion and added medical coding to her resume. Julie worked as a nanny and preschool teacher before spending five years as a customer service specialist. She then spent the last two years in social work for the Department of Children and Families.

Since moving to Florida, Julie and Donna have provided Home Watch services for friends and neighbors. They also enjoy traveling and know the importance of leaving an unoccupied home in good hands. Seeing a need in the community for professional Home Watch services, Julie and Donna turned their passion for helping others into a business.

Both Julie and Donna take advantage of the many webinars and support offered by the National Home Watch Association. They are also involved with the NHWA’s Southwest Florida Chapter, attending quarterly meetings and networking with other local professionals. Julie and Donna strongly believe in continuing their education in professional Home Watch services so that they can provide the best services for their clients.

Donna and Julie have a strong passion for helping others, providing great customer service, and paying attention to detail. They have also spent a lot of time helping multiple organizations and giving back to the community.

Julie lives in Bokeelia with her boyfriend and three children, as well as her dogs, cats, turtles, and fish. Her hobbies include reading, working out, art and music, and family trips to Orlando. Donna is in St James City with her husband, dog, and cats. Her hobbies include reading, camping, hiking, fishing, and rooting for the Red Sox.

Mockingbird Home Watch serves the Greater Pine Island area, including Matlacha, St. James City, and Bokeelia, as well as Cape Coral. You can reach them at (239) 674-6112 or at [email protected]. Learn more from their website, at www.mockingbirdhomewatch.com.

Congratulations, Donna and Julie!

As always, I wish you
Much success,
Jack
