A healthcare workstation should support the people working in it, not create another problem for them to manage.

The before photo shows a workstation with a previous mount that had no built in cable management system. Cables were hanging loose, equipment was competing for space, and the entire area felt cluttered and difficult to work around. Most cable management looks perfectly fine on installation day.

The better question is, what happens ten years later?

That’s the idea behind a new series I’m calling The 10 Year Test. Each week, I’m going to take one part of a technology installation and ask whether the decision we make today will still make sense years from now.

First up, zip ties.

They’re inexpensive, familiar, and they’ll certainly hold a cable in place. But eventually that monitor gets replaced, a camera gets upgraded, another device gets added, or someone needs access to a cable.

Now the zip tie gets cut.

Then another one gets installed.

The next change happens, and we do it again.

Over the life of a technology installation, that means more material, more technician time, and a cable management system that has to be partially rebuilt every time something changes.

Today is World Teachers’ Day, and while I may not be standing in a classroom, I like to think teaching happens anywhere knowledge gets passed forward.

Every time I show someone a better way to approach an installation, explain why a process matters, or share something I’ve learned from years in the field, that’s teaching too. Skills only stay valuable when we’re willing to pass them along.

I’m lucky to do that every day, both at home and at work. Sometimes it’s an office buildout. Sometimes it’s a healthcare facility. And someday maybe it’ll be the Kennedy Space Center, installing cable management systems in rockets.

That hasn’t happened yet.

Yet.

What I do believe is that building things together makes all of us better. The more we share what we know, the stronger the next generation becomes.

So today, pass on your knowledge. Teach someone something useful. You never know where they might take it.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize the patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals who face this disease every day.

Through my work in hospitals, I have had the opportunity to see firsthand just how much compassion, skill, and dedication hospital staff bring to patients battling cancer. The nurses, physicians, technicians, support teams, and everyone working behind the scenes play an important role in helping patients through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Healthcare technology and infrastructure matter, but the people using those systems are what make the real difference. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the teams who show up every day to provide care, comfort, and support when patients need it most.

This month, we recognize everyone affected by breast cancer and say thank you to the healthcare professionals who continue to stand beside them.

A successful installation should still make sense years after the project is complete.

Technology changes. Equipment gets replaced. New systems are added. Someone eventually has to come back, open things up, trace cables, move components, and figure out what the original installer was thinking.

SpaceX is getting ready for another huge step forward. On September 28, Starship Flight 14 is scheduled to attempt Starship’s first orbital mission around Earth, completing multiple orbits during a nearly 10 hour flight while deploying 26 next generation Starlink V3 satellites.
