On September 22nd the state of California declared state of emergency. For the 2026-2027 El Niño season. Now is the time to prep for safety and security of your family and property. I have provided some steps and recommendations to consider.
* Stock emergency supplies: Gather non-perishable food, water for several days, flashlights, batteries, medications and possibly sand bags to help prevent flooding.
* Prepare utility shutoffs: Learn how to safely turn off your home's electricity, gas, and water mains if property has flood damage and or local authorities instruct you to evacuate.
* Maintain drainage: Clear gutters, property drains, downspouts and make sure roof runoff flows away from your foundation.
* Elevate utilities: Move electrical panels, water heaters, and furnaces above projected flood lines using a licensed contractor
* Install check valves: Place backflow valves in sewer connections and drains to stop water from backing up into your house.
* Move belongings: Relocate valuables, electronics, and important furniture to upper floors or higher shelves.
* Secure outdoor items: Bring inside or tie down patio furniture and loose objects that could float or cause damage.
* Protect documents: Keep critical personal papers in a waterproof container and save encrypted digital copies.
