A museum deaccession. A Christie’s provenance. A study by one of 19th-century France’s leading painters. This intimate oil sketch by Thomas Couture was created as a study for The Promises, part of his monumental history painting The Enrollment of the Volunteers in 1792. Thought to depict the artist’s daughter, Berthe, the work reveals Couture’s remarkable ability to capture character and emotion with a few confident strokes.

Deaccessioned by the ASU Art Museum and fresh from Christie’s New York, the painting carries an exceptional exhibition history, including appearances at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. >> Estimate: $6000-8000

Palm fronds, rockwork, and a floating disc of glass. 🌴 Working in the manner of Serge Roche, this sculptural center table transforms a simple furnishing into a piece of Hollywood Regency fantasy. Rising from a rocky base, three sweeping palm fronds support a circular glass top, creating a silhouette that feels equal parts tropical, theatrical, and unmistakably 1970s.

Manufactured by Edward Krumpe or Sirmos, it channels the glamour and organic forms that made Roche’s interiors so influential, bringing a touch of Palm Beach, Beverly Hills, and old-school decorator chic wherever it lands. >> Estimate: $700-1000

A cigarette dangling from a plaster bust is one way to announce you’re not taking art history too seriously. Founded in Brooklyn in 2004, The Bruce High Quality Foundation built its reputation on equal parts satire, institutional critique, and art-world mischief. This painted plaster bust—with its cigarette butt and imitation signature—plays directly into that tradition, blurring the line between homage, forgery, prank, and sculpture.

Proof that contemporary art can have a sense of humor - Estimate: $500-700
