A minor act of rebellion.

I fell in love with a bag today. It was pushed to me via an instagram ad and I was hooked. Knowing the brand well, I knew that I would love it and visited the website.

I proceeded to screenshot the bag, close the site and DM one of my favorite local boutiques who I know carries the line. “Are you getting this bag? Or can you?” Within minutes I got a resounding “YES!”

The bag is reserved for me at this lovely small business down the street. I flipped the script on how many people support the internet to the detriment of brick and mortars that give so much back to local communities.

Rather than go into a store and discover a well-curated item and then find it for $5 cheaper on the Internet (something that customers would do all the time in my past life as a boutique owner), I fell in love on the internet and then gave the sale to a greater local love. Sometimes these items cost the same amount, sometimes they are discounted and yes, sometimes they cost a few dollars more. It is a small price to pay to keep my favorite places alive.

Win-Win.

How will you shop small and local today? What small businesses do you go out of your way to support?

I often get asked how I can live in a city during a pandemic. What I’ve found over and over again is that I need the life of a city now more than ever.

As an extrovert, the isolation and distance from others has been my biggest challenge. Taking walks outside our local parks and just seeing other people walking dogs, skating on the pond, sharing socially-distant coffee on a bench has given me life.

Today, I was delighted to see our Make Way For Ducklings statues decked out for Chinese New Year. Being 1/2 Chinese this touched me deeply. These ducks (and the wonderful secret people who keep them outfitted) bring joy to residents and visitors year round. And btw if 2021 hasn’t lived up to your hopes just yet why don’t you celebrate with us February 12th and take a do over?

What gives YOU joy, peace, hope during this tough time?

Since 2021 started I have been inundated with social media ads from digital media providers. They offer the 10 best THIS and the proven THAT to rocket your socials into the stratosphere. They promise you’ll be a Boss Babe with the right color palette, slick photos of you sitting at beautiful locations, etc. They say, “Be ME, and you’ll succeed.”

Well, as a woman of a certain age and years of first-hand small business experience, I know what I DON’T want. I don’t want a formula. I don’t want cookie-cutter. I don’t want to Boss Babe. I want AUTHENTICITY. I want vulnerability and earned strength. I want the true story. I want to be ME. And I want to help you be YOU.

And that’s the approach I take with my clients. Sure, best practices are always welcome and considered. But ultimately my best practice is to listen to my clients, help identify pain points to solve and highlights to share. Above all else, my best practice is to produce work that is authentic to them and their brand. Because anything else is just a cheap imitation.

So I’ll leave the boss babe-ing to someone else. If you want to tell your truth and share your story in a way that looks and feels like YOU, then let’s talk.

It’s been a busy time in my household. December kicked off with my daughter’s 16th birthday. We tried to make up for the lack of a party with giant foil balloons (the unicorn was/is a welcome houseguest). Since then the purchasing and wrapping of gifts (small and local businesses whenever possible), decorating the home and maneuvering work, school and LIFE in a pandemic has kept me on my toes.

For some clients this is go time and we are hustling. For others it’s a quiet welcome respite as we look forward to a new year and hopefully new and better opportunities.

Through all of it I remain grateful and in awe of human grit and perseverance. We are capable of so much more than we know. And perhaps a silver lining of 2020 is the knowledge that our stores of strength are deep, our capacity for love is great and our ability to pivot and innovate is immense.

Sending lots of light and love to all. Take a moment to pause and enjoy the silver linings. 💖

Don’t let what’s directly in front of you prevent you from seeing what’s in the distance.

Entrepreneurs and small business owners juggle so many tasks all at once that often the loudest/most urgent concerns get the most attention, but those aren’t always the most important.

At least once a week carve out 15 minutes to revisit your goals. Ask yourself why are you in business? What about your business brings you joy? Are you attending to those tasks that will enable you to stay true to your vision and passion? And if not, why not?

Sometimes the simple act of contemplating what’s most important will give you the reset you need and deserve.

YOU are your greatest commodity! If you are a small business owner, your passion, drive and vision birthed something amazing. Don’t neglect your own story when promoting your business. They go hand in hand.

We are all looking for authenticity, so show your passion, your heart and your spirit. Don’t be afraid to post your face or yourself in stories. People want YOU! And you don’t have to be perfect.

During my 15+ years as a small business retail store owner, and now as a small business consultant, I have thought about the many hats we wear as entrepreneurs. Our to do lists are long and often messy. Our original daily goals get altered and pushed aside for the realities of a clogged toilet or client in crisis. And we react. And we pivot. And we change. And we solve.

The art of entrepreneurship isn’t in doing everything RIGHT, it’s in DOING. And thinking quickly and flexibly and realizing life is messy and business can be messy.

Small business owners are unique and malleable and can see the end game while reacting to the obstacles in the way.

Never forget that juggling the balls is your SUPER POWER. You are switching between tasks so quickly that others don’t know it’s happening. And that is not being disorganized. That’s being amazing!

In 2001, I opened my first store, Moxie, a women’s shoes, bags and accessories boutique. In 2008, I gave her a sister store in a nearby suburb.

I LOVED being a small business owner and I adored my shops. I stayed open for 15+ years and closed due to rising rents, world domination by Amazon and other online sites and the popularity of fast-fashion.

Not a day goes by that I don’t miss my business. There is such honor in serving communities, employing others and juggling the 100s of daily challenges of small business ownership.

I understand small business. I lived small business and it is now a part of my “character DNA.” That’s why I have chosen to help other small businesses now. I marry my past corporate communications experience with my first-hand knowledge of small business challenges to identify and solve problems which are sometimes hard to see when you are too close to them.

If you need another set of eyes and a resource who gets it, I’d love to chat with you.

Thank you to all the nurses who work so hard to keep us safe and healthy. I am amazed by the level of care you provide and the many balls you juggle throughout the course of your day. You are the backbone of a hospital and I am so grateful that you have our backs. 💖🙏

I am so grateful for those of you who have followed my new business page. I know most of you personally, and I adore you. I am starting a new chapter and hoping to help other small businesses STAY in business through branding, marketing and communications programs.

My services include social media management, brand strategy consulting, public and community relations and other marketing/communications efforts. After 25+ years in communications and small business, I am looking to create client programs that are personalized, flexible and most of all empathetic to all of the challenges small businesses face.

If you or someone you know could use some assistance please send them my way. I'd love to help tell their story.

XO, Karen
