How to make your structures MECE?👀

🚩MECE is an acronym for the phrase Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive.

🚩“Mutually exclusive” is a concept that says two events cannot occur at the same time. Mutually exclusive ideas would not overlap.

🚩“Collectively Exhaustive” means that the set of ideas is inclusive of all possible options.

🚩Candidates struggle with making their structures MECE, assuming that it's one of the key requirements at the case interviews. However not all structures can or should be MECE. In fact, only Math structures (e.g. Profitability) can be 100% MECE

🚩Frameworks, Drivers, Segmentations, Strategic and other types of structures should not necessarily be MECE. You should still try to to make them mutually exclusive and cover as many aspects of the problem as possible

How to get a referral❓

1️⃣Leverage your network - find current MBB employees in your network and ask them for a mock interview. Ask them how to increase your chances of getting in, and most probably, they'll help with a referral
2️⃣Ask your MBA classmates - MBBs have on-campus recruiters in top schools, and your ex-MBB classmates can refer you to them
3️⃣Reaching out to partners in your field of expertise - If you are an experienced hire, I suggest talking to partners in your industry. You can find them on Linkedin or at various events. Ask them for a short call, describe your background, and ask if you'll be a good fit. Chances are high they'll forward your resume further
4️⃣Case championships and company events - several times a year, various offices conduct case competitions or group case sessions in which you can participate. If you demonstrate distinctive performance, you'll be invited directly to the interview and skip the line.
5️⃣Participate in the events, send Thank You notes, ask for a chat. After each event, there is a Q&A session where you can talk to consultants 1 on 1 or in a group. Send a Thank You Note after the event asking for a mock interview
6️⃣Cold reach out on Linkedin - try to find consultants with whom you have something in common - School, Previous Job, industry, etc. Ask for a coffee chat to get career advice or ask if they know someone who can give a mock interview. I would not recommend cold calling partners since they are less likely to respond.

What is a referral❓

The formal referral process is the following:
1️⃣The consultant makes you a referral through the system and uploads your resume. Usually, he has to indicate why he thinks you are the right candidate.
2️⃣You skip some steps in the recruiting process (CV screening at McK, Test at Bain)
3️⃣The consultant gets a referral bonus if you get a job.

Who can make a referral❓
✅Any current employee, from Analyst to Partner
✅Any employee globally, if you are applying to McKinsey or BCG. At Bain, most of the offices require local referrals.
✅Your MBA classmates (MBB alums) can make a referral via an on-campus recruiter at the target schools.

When should you take time during a case?

Always take:
⏱1-2 min for initial structure. But the faster, the better
⏱Up to 1 minute for the conclusion. Always take the time! Your conclusion should include supporting numbers, and you need time to collect them
⏱30 sec - 1 min for questions on creativity. It's really hard to be creative "On-the-go"

It's a bit more tricky with taking time during the case:
❌It's not OK to take 30 seconds and then come up with a single idea. And to take time again if the idea is not correct. This is called "Guessing"
✅It’s OK to take 30 seconds, draw a new structure (or continuation of your previous structure) and come up with a structured way to approach the problem.

❓How To Train Case Interview Math❓

🎓Several things are important during the calculation part of the interview:

🎯Making no mistakes
🎯Calculating in the most efficient way
🎯Calculating fast

The following skills will help you to succeed:

1️⃣Learn how to multiply double-digit numbers fast. It takes just a couple of hours to learn how to apply this method on paper and a couple of days to start doing these calculations mentally, but it's worth it. Swipe right to find the detailed video

2️⃣Learn how to work with zeros. Simply always use the powers of 10. You'll be able to multiply / divide the numbers and sum up / subtract the powers separately. If you get used to writing all the numbers that way, you will never lose zeros.

3️⃣Learn the division table. This method will help you calculate any percentage problems such as market shares or margins. Swipe right to find a division table

4️⃣Learn how to solve equations and systems of equations. They are not that rare in cases, but many candidates struggle with applying equations to solving problems. You can use GMAT books to practice.

❓When And How To Reschedule The Interview❓

🎓One thing you should know is that rescheduling your interviews has zero impact on your chances of getting an offer:
1️⃣Your recruiters are there to help you, and they will support your decision
2️⃣Your Interviewers, Managers or Partners, would not be informed about rescheduling

☝️We do not recommend rescheduling when it is part of the on-campus recruiting with a predefined timeline. We also don't recommend recruiting if you are applying for a specialist role (opposite to generalist) - chances are high that someone else will get your job.
🎯Feel free to take 2-3 additional weeks if it will make you feel more comfortable and study with CaseCopilot to prep efficiently!

❓Interviewer- Or Candidate Led Format❓
One of the most common questions candidates are struggling with. Indeed, there are two types of cases:
1️⃣Candidate-led cases - the most common type of cases, when you lead the case
2️⃣Interviewer-led cases - cases where the interviewer guides you to prioritize the particular areas of the analysis and leads you to the solution. Bain and BCG have mostly candidate-led cases while McKinsey has both.

🎓Very often, candidates say they are preparing for the McKinsey cases, meaning that they are only practicing the interviewer-led format. However, it's a huge mistake. You can get both types of cases at McKinsey. In the first round, it will be mostly managers leading the case. In the second round, the chances are higher that you will be driving the case on your own.

☝️It's important to understand that there is no difference between those cases if you are well-prepared. Actually, the interviewer-led cases are even easier since the interviewer guides you. We recommend practicing both formats prioritizing Candidate-led
