A drawer of brass ornaments, most of them older than any of us. Holly, acorn, thistle, rose. The small vocabulary from which a great many spines have been written. Harcourt has kept its ornament drawers stocked since 1900, and the same brass that lettered a Victorian gift book is still finishing spines today.

The paper drawers on a quiet afternoon. Every sheet made by hand, every pattern unrepeatable. Somewhere in here is the endpaper for the next book to leave the shop. Marbled papers have lined the endpapers of Harcourt's bindings for more than a hundred years, and no two books have ever left the shop with quite the same one.

The alphabet, in every size and face. Nothing on this bench arrived by keyboard. Every letter that lands on a spine is chosen from a drawer like this one. Harcourt has kept its type cases in working use since the shop opened in 1900, and they are still where every title begins.

Memoirs of the Foreign Legion by D. H. Lawrence, dressed in green morocco, red labels, and a small ornament worked in gold at the head and foot of each panel. One book, closer to leaving the bench. Every fine binding that leaves Harcourt is finished this way, by a single set of hands from first stitch to final stamping.

Every spine is hand-sewn. Every line of gold tooling is applied by hand. Every restoration is a commitment to preserving history for the next generation.

As America celebrates 250 years, we're reminded that craftsmanship, patience, and excellence are part of our nation's story too. Some traditions aren't meant to be replaced. They're meant to be passed on.
