I had the opportunity to sit down with Shirah Benarde, founder of and Shark Tank entrepreneur, for an important conversation about keeping students safer as they head back to campus.

🚨 NCSAM | LET'S TALK SAFETY: HAVE AN EXIT STRATEGY

What would you do if a situation suddenly became uncomfortable—or unsafe?

Most people don't think about their exit until they need one.

That's why having an exit strategy should be part of every student's safety plan.

Before you go out:

🔹 Identify potential exits and safe places nearby.
🔹 Have a plan with your friends for when it's time to leave.
🔹 Create a signal that means "I need to go."
🔹 Think through the "what if?" scenarios.
🔹 Know who you can call and where you can get help.

And know the warning signs of alcohol poisoning.

If someone is unresponsive, has abnormal breathing, or has blue, cold, or clammy skin, call 911. Don't leave them alone.

Your safety toolkit should include more than apps and devices.

It should include awareness, resources, trusted people, and a plan.

Because when something doesn't feel right, you don't need permission to leave.

Be Proactive. Be Prepared. Be Protected.

🎓 NCSAM | National Campus Safety Awareness Month

LET'S TALK FACTS.

College should be an exciting time of independence, growth, friendships, and new experiences.

But with that independence comes the responsibility to understand your environment and recognize risks before they become emergencies.

For National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM), we're focusing on three areas every student should know:

🏠 DORM SAFETY
Bunk beds, door and window locks, balconies, fall prevention, and knowing what to do if something goes wrong in your living space.

🚨 THE RED ZONE
The first weeks of the academic year can bring increased vulnerability to risks such as sexual assault, hazing, binge drinking, alcohol-related harm, drink spiking, and other dangerous situations.

🛡️ PERSONAL SAFETY
Situational awareness matters. Know your surroundings. Know your resources. Know how to get help. And have a plan before you need one.

The most important message?

Much of this harm is preventable.

Safety isn't about living in fear.

It's about being Proactive. Prepared. Protected.

Students spend weeks preparing for classes, housing, schedules, and social activities.

But how much time do they spend learning about the environment around them?

Before exploring a new campus or city, know:

📍 Where you are
🚨 Where to get help
🏥 Where the nearest medical facility is
🚔 How to contact local emergency services
🚌 How you're getting home
📱 Who you can call if something changes

Your surroundings are part of your safety plan.

Don't wait until you need the information to look for it.

Know before you go.

START THE SAFETY CONVERSATION

🎓 NCSAM | NATIONAL CAMPUS SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH

Safety doesn't begin when something goes wrong.

It begins with a conversation.

As students head into a new academic year, talk about the things we don't always want to talk about:

• What would you do if you felt unsafe?
• Who would you call?
• Where would you go?
• What if your phone died?
• What if a friend needed help?
• What would you do in an emergency?

The goal isn't to make students afraid.

It's to make them prepared.

My philosophy is simple:

Proactive. Prepared. Protected.

This NCSAM, let's make campus safety part of the conversation—not just the emergency plan.

Safety isn’t simply avoiding danger. It’s about creating habits that strengthen your ability to respond when life becomes unpredictable.
