Which 2 did you pick and if you could do it again, would you?

I remember thinking that college was everything all of the time. No commitments (except everything I overcommitted to); soaring grades (naw, Bs, or CS, get degrees - damn you stats); and late nights that lead to sleeping all day (yep, that happened).

What I really learned, and continue to re-learn, is that it’s about priorities and those may shift year to year, month to month, day to day. And that’s ok.

The same thing happens with a new job - what you prioritize in the first few week when you’re on information overload looks different than a few months (or years) down that road.

Spoiler alert: You’re the biggest roadblock in your career.

But the great thing about that is YOU have the power to do something about it!

Here are 3 ways you may be sabotaging your career & what to do instead:

1) Doing everything yourself

You may think you’re showing how great you are, but you’re really burning yourself out & excluding folks in the process. Take the opportunity to delegate and collaborate - it’ll keep you in one piece and bring people along with your ideas and projects.

2) Assuming they’ll tell you feedback

Nope. Rarely do you actually work in the feedback culture your company says it is. But that’s an easy fix. Ask! A “Stop/Start/Continue” can be a great way to give feedback some structure.

3) Holding yourself back from that promotion

Are you really missing key skills? Are you sure you aren’t fighting off imposter syndrome instead? If there’s an opportunity you want, apply! If your boss doesn’t bring up your career, you can! You’re the one driving your career so go for it!

When you get out of your own way, you give your career a chance to take off!
