STUDIO PHILOSOPHY

Natural Modernism

The work of Flavin Architects is deeply rooted in the context in which our projects are sited; we call this approach to design Natural Modernism. The firm designs buildings that relate beautifully to their surroundings, with sculpted lines and timeless materials. With an aim to blur the distinction between inside and out, we use transparency and axial views

to draw the eye to the natural world. We make innovative use of cutting-edge materials and techniques to conserve energy, water and the natural systems present on the site. The success of our projects depends on strong relationships and teamwork. Flavin Architects seeks to understand our clients' intentions so that we can translate these goals into a design tailored to them. Our hand-rendered drawings, models and computer simulations work together to ensure that our clients understand how a concept will work and accurately convey the project's look and feel when built.

For Waldhaus, our current project in Metrowest Boston, MA, we worked with clients looking to preserve the character of the forested setting with a low impact, harmonious addition to the neighborhood. This “garden in the woods” is carefully nestled into the existing topography and features two private wings linked by a central public volume.

Thank you to our collaborators on this project.

Step inside (and outside!) our reimagined F. Frederick Bruck home in Cambridge, MA.

The wall-to-wall floating credenza with integrated lighting was added to provide additional storage space and accommodate the clients’ hosting needs during gatherings while referencing original floating millwork in the foyer. We updated the adjacent first floor windows and doors to blur the interior and exterior line such that one feels as if they were outside while standing within the solarium.

Thank you to our collaborators on the Cohen House.

Large windows at our Norwell, MA project cover the feature stair by in natural light. The open treads and horizontal rails allow the light to shine through into the hall and kitchen.

From Colin's sketch to the final project, our Lantern Studio in Wellesley.

Working from the idea that our creative endeavors require calming spaces with minimal distraction, we conceived of each level of the outbuilding as a place where our client could exercise their creative interests. This space added a Vespa workshop, writer's retreat, and gardening area to the site.

Thanks to our collaborators on this project.

Cohen House. Our ongoing renovation of F. Frederick Bruck’s 1962 Bauhaus-inspired home features a solarium expansion adjacent to the dining area. The “Gropius Grey” color of the solarium walls, carried in from the exterior, is juxtaposed with the Arcilla Red of the credenza countertop and color-washed dining room walls.

To celebrate and stay true to the home’s original character, we developed Bruck’s existing vertical language, detailing, and color use while updating the house to best fit the clients’ needs.

Thank you to our collaborators on this project.

At our West Gloucester House, the home’s linear layout is oriented parallel to the contours of the hillside, minimizing site disturbance. The stacked massing and galvanized steel detailing of the home recall the industrial vernacular of the Gloucester waterfront, and the dark color helps the house settle into its wooded site.

Thank you to our collaborators on this project.

At the Steinert House, we looked at many iterations of rethinking the sunroom. Our work clarified the flow between spaces, addressed older renovations that obscured Bruck’s design intent, and restored key details.

Thank you to our collaborators on this project.

"True to plan, the character of the farmhouse and addition couldn’t be more different. The addition is wrapped in vertical, dark-stained mahogany slats—a riff on the farmhouse’s horizontal board and batten siding." -
