Thomas Jefferson's manuscript copy of the Declaration of Independence is the heart of the exhibit. I attended a wonderful workshop on The Declaration, etymology and calligraphy. The miniature of Elizabeth Freedman served as a personal reminder of Jefferson's enslavement of human beings. Many thanks to MHS.

Excellent explanation of soil stratification and profiling in the field. Congratulations to Boston City Archaeology for another dig put to bed

We are wrapping up the site at 190 Bowdoin today. This includes documenting, photographing, & backfilling our trenches.

Profiling is when we create a measured drawing of a representative wall/s of the excavation unit to show the stratigraphy of the soil. We use a Munsell color chart to assign standardized soil color designations to our various strata.

In Boston, our A horizon (topsoil) is dark & organic. Our B horizon (subsoil) is split into a darker B1 & older, lighter B2 below it. The C horizon is glacial & predates human occupation in the area.

Did you know that Massachusetts has its own Trail of Tears? 350 years ago, people were forced from their English-style praying villages to Deer Island by their friends and protectors. I was humbled and deeply moved by the Nashobah Praying Indians Remembrance and Friendship Ceremony on Sat. This is their land and they are still here.
