Labor Day is about honoring the people whose work keeps our communities moving.

Today, we’re thinking about the labor behind small businesses too. The early mornings, late nights, second jobs, deliveries, customer service, bookkeeping, problem-solving, and all the work that happens behind the scenes.

To the entrepreneurs, employees, makers, service providers, and teams building businesses and creating opportunity in our communities, we see the work.

Looking at these smiles, it’s hard to believe how much it downpoured on Sunday.

But we didn’t let a little rain stop us!

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and came out for the Seaport x Black Owned Bos. Outdoor Market. We appreciate every person who showed up with umbrellas and rain boots, ready to shop, discover new businesses, and support our local Black-owned business community.

And a special thank you to all of the participating businesses, artists, and creatives who showed up, set up, and made the day happen right alongside us.

The sun eventually decided to join us, but the support was there rain or shine.

For those who understandably couldn’t make it out, you can still support and discover the amazing business owners and creatives who participated. All participating businesses are tagged here and linked on our website.

It’s Market Day!

We’re bringing Art & Soul to the Seaport today in celebration of Black Business Month.

Join us from 12–6 PM on Harbor Way for an afternoon of shopping, art, music, food, drinks, and family-friendly fun.

Along with a curated lineup of Black-owned businesses, today’s market will feature a live art demonstration by Jason Talbot of Artists For Humanity, bookmark making with Maya Alia of AIRI, Suya Joint food truck & Tasty Shay's SoulFood Food Sunday, face painting, and a visit from our friends at Bookish Black Boston hosting a pop-up nearby.

Come early. The first 150 guests will receive a complimentary copy of the Black Owned Bos. Guide to Boston, a $12 value, courtesy of Airbnb, The Boston Foundation, and the Office of Mayor Michelle Wu.

Today for , we're highlighting Jae'da Turner, owner of Black Owned Bos.

Founded in 2019, Black Owned Bos. is a mission-driven business creating pathways to sales, visibility, and opportunity for Black-owned businesses in Greater Boston and beyond. What began as a community resource has grown into a recognized platform connecting Black-owned businesses with consumers, companies, institutions, and opportunities across the region.

Through a directory of more than 1,700 Black-owned businesses, markets and activations, retail, corporate gifting, media, and strategic services, Black Owned Bos. creates new ways for businesses to be discovered, supported, and brought into spaces where they can grow.

This weekend, Black Owned Bos. is bringing Art & Soul to the Seaport for the next Seaport x Black Owned Bos. Outdoor Market.

Taking place Sunday, August 23, from 12–6 p.m. at Harbor Way, the free event will feature Black-owned businesses, art, music, food, drinks, and family-friendly activities. This month's market will also feature a Bookish Black Boston pop-up, live art by Jason Talbot of Artists For Humanity, bookmark making with Maya Alia, and food from Suya Joint.

August is notoriously slow for small businesses, making Black Business Month an especially important time to be intentional about where we spend.

This weekend, put that intention into action at Bos. Shop South End | Boston Gift Shop in the South End.

Bos. Shop South End brings together gifts, books, treats, home goods and more from Black-owned and local brands, giving you the opportunity to support multiple small businesses with one stop.

And during a slower season, every purchase, visit, share, and introduction to someone new matters.

For the sixth year, Black Owned Bos. had the opportunity to manage the BAMS Fest vendor marketplace.

Shoutout to everyone who came out to experience the festival, and to everyone who stopped by the marketplace to shop with the participating businesses and connect!

Today, on the first day of Black Business Month, we’re introducing the Visibility Capital Fund, a new initiative from Black Owned Bos. that will provide $500 restricted micro grants to micro businesses across Massachusetts for defined marketing and visibility projects.

The Fund is intentionally powered by the Black Owned Bos. Guide to Boston, a visibility project in its own right. The Guide was created to help more people discover where to shop, eat, and explore while directing greater attention and spending toward Black-owned businesses.

Now, its impact will extend even further.

Once 1,500 copies of the Guide have been sold, applications for the first round of Visibility Capital Fund grants will open.

Since launching the Guide in May, 120 copies have been sold. That means we are already 12% of the way there, with 880 to go.

The grants can be used for a defined project such as professional photography, product packaging, signage, a website update, paid advertising, or another marketing investment that helps a business reach more people.

When resources are limited, marketing is often delayed. But visibility and a solid brand can lead to customers, partnerships, and new opportunities. This Fund creates a direct cycle: a project designed to increase visibility will help finance visibility for other businesses.
