It’s finally starting to feel like spring here in Massachusetts - and with it comes increased activity from pests like carpenter ants 🌱🐜
In this video, you can see carpenter ants actively excavating within a tree, removing small wood fragments (called frass) as they expand their galleries. Unlike termites, carpenter ants don’t eat wood; they carve it out to create space for their colony, often taking advantage of areas that are already softened by moisture or decay.
This kind of activity outdoors is a natural part of the ecosystem. However, it can also be an early indicator of nearby colonies that may eventually explore structures like homes and businesses.
The key this time of year is awareness and prevention. Keeping an eye out for subtle signs such as small piles of sawdust-like material, large ant sightings, or moisture issues 🔍
