From the first stirrings of a nation to the defining symbols of American identity. American Stories: Celebrating 250 Years of Independence brings together objects that trace the remarkable arc of American History.
A 1676 charter issued by Charles II, one of the earliest documents of colonial governance, sits alongside George Washington's 1782 Niderviller porcelain, gifted during the Revolutionary War and described by Washington himself as being of "inestimable value", Ronald Reagan’s baseball cap and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s silk top hat.
Discover work by Joshua Johnson, among the earliest known Black professional painters in the United States, offering a rare and intimate record of a young republic, alongside Felix de Weldon's original Iwo Jima monument, long thought lost and now rediscovered, returning to public view as the nation marks 250 years of independence.
