We all need to make choices on how we “show up” in the face of adversity. Our lives are happening now – they are not happening tomorrow, or next week, or next year, or even someday. Life is not meant to be passive. Waiting for someone else to take control of our lives is not progress, and it does not lead to success.
When I experience difficult times, I use the image of walking up a hill. I look at the top of the hill so that I know where I am headed. My focus then goes to looking down at my feet. I start out by taking the few steps that are in front of me, and then continue to move forward, progressing steadily, and before long I am at the top of the hill. Reaching that pinnacle, I take a deep breath and look back at what I have accomplished. I smile and think to myself, “I did it!” That two-second acknowledgement and celebration help build confidence for what is yet to come.
We build who we are and what we become by every step we take, every sight we see, and all the words that we have heard as well as those that we have spoken throughout our lifetime. No one knows what your eyes have seen, what your heart has felt, or what you have had to walk through. Every challenge you have overcome adds content to the quality and grit of who you are today. It is important to capitalize on those experiences, both good and bad, to be able to propel your life forward. Our current feelings, personality traits, and behaviors have been shaped by our distant and recent past. Many of the challenges, perceptions, judgments, wisdom, intellect, and social skills that were formed since childhood significantly impact our lives now. Even those experiences that seemed inconsequential at the time may have a dramatic impact on our decisions today.
