I have now presented the six factors of intercultural adjustment among corporate expatriates and shown the strong link between adjustment and successful job performance. But can this adjustment and success be PREDICTED beforehand, prior to an international assignment?? The answer is YES, using the Tucker Assessment Profile (TAP). Peer-reviewed studies have shown that those who score high on the TAPscales or who work to improve and develop low scores do perform well on their assignments, compared with those who do not. The visual above presents the TAP. In future posts, I will explain each of these TAP dimensions.

The sixth and last factor of successful intercultural adjustment is Affect, or Feelings. In many ways, it is the result of achieving the other five factors. If an expatriate can achieve Acceptance of the host country and culture, Knowledge, Lifestyle Adjustment, Interaction, and Communication, they experience a heightened level of Affect during theremainder of their international assignment. Closely associated with the adaptation factor of Lifestyle Adjustment is Interaction with local people. Successful adjusters engage themselves in the country of assignment, which means that they choose to be with local nationals, not only on the job, but during their discretionary time as well. They make local friendships that replace those left backhome and that help to support their new lifestyle. This is done despite the “language barrier”, and in fact language learning is an added benefit to this interaction.

So what is intercultural adjustment and international assignment success and why is it important? There are over 12,000 multinational enterprises in the world today, who manage over 800.000 expatriate employees. At the executive and upper management levels, these expatriate assignments are million dollar investments. Tucker International has studied adjustment and success among thousands of expatriate employees assigned all over the world. Tucker applies the analogy of the fight/flight reaction to stress to understand adjustment.. Fight is rejection of the host culture in favor of one’s own. Flight is withdrawing from interaction with the host culture. Successful adjustmentis walking the fine line between one’s own culture and that of the locals. There are six factors that define this adjustment (to be explained in the coming days)
