One of Journeys goals since 2018 was to find ways to make aviation more sustainable at the Boulder Airport, KBDU. This week we've taken a big step in that direction by brining in unleaded UL94 aviation gasoline (avgas) to KBDU. On top of acquiring two Light Sport training aircraft a couple of years ago, the unleaded fuel helps Journeys and the Boulder aviation stakeholders address community concerns about the use of leaded fuel, noise, and our carbon footprint in general.
About 70% of the GA fleet of piston powered aircraft can use this fuel, and Journeys will be using it in 90% of our training fleet, and 100% of our glider tow planes.
CDOT is subsidizing the fuel allowing UL94 to be offered at the same price as 100LL delivered from the truck (sorry, we need another tank to offer UL94 self serve).
If you want to use UL94 in your aircraft, you must get the STC from Swift Fuels. Please check that your aircraft / engine is eligible for the STC at swiftfuelsavgas.com/stc. STCs purchased now for UL94 will also apply to Swift Fuels 100R unleaded fuel when it gets final approval, hopefully later this year.
The City of Boulder is reimbursing KBDU based aircraft for the $100 purchase of the STCs required for your aircraft to use the fuel, just submit your receipt to the Airport Management.
