White pine trees can hide extensive rot. While this one had some pretty obvious signs others can be a little more elusive.
Here are a few things I look at when doing a tree assessment.
1. Poor trunk taper. The tree is about the same diameter at breast height as it is 50 feet up.
2. Bulging in the trunk.
3. Poorly defined root flare or the trunk of the tree seems to go straight into the ground.
4. Pruning cuts or broken stubs appear to be soft and rotten versus hard and dry.
