Nobody tells Black women that when you move up, you may start paying three different taxes.

Advocacy tax — people expect you to be the person who speaks up every time there is an issue around inequity.

Only tax — the pressure of being one of the few, wondering if you’re being too much.

Family payroll and resource tax — because as your income increases, family starts expecting you to help more financially and open more doors.
So here is my advice:

Decide in advance what you are willing to carry. 💜

Moving up should increase your influence.

It does NOT increase everyone's access to you.

Happy Indigenous People's day!

It can be exhausting to be the only woman or person of color in Corporate spaces.

Use your visibility strategically:

1. ​Protect your capacity. You don’t have to mentor everyone or fix every inequity. 🛡️
2. ​Build your circle. Find sponsors, peers and advisors beyond your organization. 🤝🏾
3. ​Release perfection. You can challenge, learn and get something wrong. ✨

Your presence matters.

You’re allowed to be a leader before you’re a symbol.

Do this one thing this week:
Call 5 people.

Ask:
“Do you know anyone you can introduce me to in my field, or do you know of any job opportunities?”
That’s it.
Your next opportunity may come from a conversation, not an application.
Make the 5 calls.
