A Heat Advisory is in effect across Northwest Ohio over the next few days, and older adults are among those at the highest risk for heat-related illness.

As we age, our bodies don't regulate temperature as efficiently, and certain medications or chronic health conditions can make extreme heat even more dangerous.

Here are a few simple ways to stay safe:
• Stay in air conditioning as much as possible.
• Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
• Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day (typically 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Never leave anyone, including pets, in a parked vehicle.
• Check in on older family members, friends, and neighbors to make sure they have a cool place to stay and what they need.

Know the warning signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, confusion, nausea, rapid heartbeat, headache, or excessive fatigue. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, such as a high body temperature, confusion, or loss of consciousness, call 911 immediately.

A quick phone call or visit could make all the difference. Let's look out for one another and help keep our seniors safe during this stretch of dangerous heat.

Long Term Care facilities (aka Nursing Homes) are typically paid for 1 of 4 ways: Through VA benefits, Long Term Care Insurance, Private Pay at around $10,000/month, or Medicaid.

If you have VA benefits lined up or LTC insurance, that's fantastic!! However, most people do not have these benefits and pay privately at $10,000/month until they no longer have any assets remaining and their last choice is to apply for Medicaid.

This article explains the 5-year lookback rule when applying for Medicaid. It is a "must read" if you have elderly parents and may need to look into elder care options in the future. 💛

This day encourages individuals to reflect on and document their healthcare preferences, ensuring that their wishes are respected in times of need. Here at GCP, we understand the importance of these conversations and are here to support families in navigating these critical decisions.​

Let's take this opportunity to initiate discussions with our loved ones about their healthcare choices and advance directives. By doing so, we honor their autonomy and ensure peace of mind for everyone involved.​

For this Giving Tuesday, we'd like to highlight two local nonprofit organizations in which we participate here in NWO:

First, we have the Stroke Life Center located in downtown Toledo. This organization was founded by stroke survivors for stroke survivors. They provide extended physical and occupational therapies, support groups, and socialization opportunities to stroke survivors- free of charge :)

Next, we have Connecting People & Places. This is an organization helping folks with developmental disabilities to become involved in their community. They run a day program in which the individuals complete tasks and volunteer to serve their communities and give back.

Both of these organizations are doing very important work here in NWO and on this Giving Tuesday, we ask that you check them out and donate to their causes if you feel called to do so!

Two years ago, I met a wonderful lady who was living in her own senior apartment next to her best friend. Her family was looking at nursing home options at the time but she was adamant that she didn't want that.

Through careful coordination of services, advocating for her needs, and closing gaps in care, she’s been able to stay safely in her home! Her family’s stress is reduced, and they’ve avoided the extra costs a facility would have brought.

Today, she’s happy, comfortable, and thriving... living life on her own terms.

This is what care management is all about: supporting independence, giving families peace of mind, and keeping people where they feel at home.
